There were some great performances from British archers at the recent international fixtures.
Back at the World Champs in Leipzig, British teams won medals and in doing so, guaranteed a full presence for Beijing. Alan Wills beat Simon Terry in the bronze medal match. Terry needed a 9 with the last arrow to win, but shot an 8 and then lost 10-9 with the first sudden death arrow. The British gents recurves (Terry, Wills and Larry Godfrey) won silver losing to Korea in the final whilst the British lady recurves lost to Korea in the semis but beat Italy to claim bronze. This performance means Britain will have the maximum representation at the Olympics next year.
In Dover, at the 4th qualifying leg of the World Cup, the recurve teams also performed well. Alan Wills again met Simon Terry, this time in the semi-final and again Wills came out on top going through to lose to Bajinima Tsyrempilov in the final, but qualify for the 4-man World Cup Final in Dubai in November and a shot at the $20,000 prize. There was bronze for the gents recurves and gold for the ladies team of Alison Williamson, Naomi Folkard and Charlotte Burgess. Edinburgh duo Emma Downie and Jenny Jeppsson (for Sweden) also shot in the event, although both were first round casualties. Also shooting was Andy Callaway who made it through to the last 16.
The big news for students was the mixed pairs event however. Emma Downie was initially drawn with fellow Briton Michael Peart, Russians Tsyrempilov and Natalya Erdyniyeva were also paired together so there was a swap, in the interests of "internation-ness". The Downie/Tsyrempilov partnership then proceeded to sweep to the bronze medal. Their victim in that bronze medal match was the partnership of Jenny Jeppsson and Michele Frangilli. I would like to tell you more about it, but there is no info on the website.
