In the SUS League Edinburgh derby on 24th November, Edinburgh completed a low scoring win with only 2062. This assailable total was far too much for their city rivals, as Napier finished second, 140 ahead of Heriot-Watt but over 250 behind Edinburgh. The real story in the match was at novice level where Napier shocked their more illustrious rivals with an 18 point win, 1337-1319 to lead the early season table. One week later the SUS Novice Championships took place at Napier, the first time the club has hosted a SUS-wide event. This time it was Aberdeen who narrowly out scored Edinburgh to win the event by only 8 points, 1360-1352, hosts Napier a little way behind, third on 1319. Dan Wielding (Napier) top scored with 484.
It comes as something of a relief that SUS is genuinely competitive this year (at novice level anyway) with a straight three way scrap between Edinburgh, Napier and Aberdeen for medals and certificates.
Those three clubs however face very different venue issues in the coming seasons. Edinburgh University are planning a new permanent double range, underneath their existing cellar venue - see the recent article on GNAS website Exciting developments at Edinburgh University to open in 2010. Aberdeen are contemplating a new venue which could also allow a club at neighbours RGU to reappear. In contrast, Napier face homelessness as their venue is to be demolished in February, some time after the League Match there is completed. Despite numerous enquiries, Napier's club still do not even know the date of demolition, and have not been assured of an alternative venue for September 2008.
In the words of Piotr Wojtczuk (Napier's President) welcoming archers to the SUS Novice Champs "...for most of you, the first and last chance to shoot in this venue".
