Toucan play at disc game [13/Nov/17]

Defending champions Birmingham will host BUTC 2018. The competition will take place on Sunday 25th March in Birmingham's Munrow Arena.

Birmingham have a long and rich BUTC history. They are one of only 3 teams that have attended all 15 BUTCs to date (Edinburgh and Nottingham are the other two) a sequence that will presumably extend for at least one more year. Birmingham has never hosted BUTC before, but have hosted 4 BUCS (or past equivalent) Championships - Indoors in 1992 and 2003 and Outdoors in 1990 and 2010.

Birmingham have won the set of team medals - gold (2017), silver (2011) and bronze (2016). Their 2011 run came despite qualifying in 21st position. Four straight upsets, including top seeded co-hosts Edinburgh, set numerous seeding based records - lowest ranked QF (shared), SF and F (both outright). In 15 years, no other team ranked outside the top 6 has made to the last two, although Nottingham proved a step too far in that final. If there was an element of good fortune about their run in 2011, Birmingham have been serious tournament heavyweights in recent years, getting closer to the Werner Beiter trophy with every swing. They lost an epic QF in a fourth shoot off - another shared record - against Nottingham in 2015. Birmingham lost to Warwick in a 2016 semi-final (going on to win bronze) but gained revenge in the 2017 final - 17-15 the highest scoring final on aggregate since the present format was introduced in 2007.

Birmingham's supporters always bring the volume, the Toucans and of course the confectionery, amplifying the atmosphere of a competition that thrives on it. The trophy won't have to travel far on competition morning, but what about in the evening? Only those little yellow discs of destiny have the answer.

Keep an eye on the BUTC Tournament Info page for more details as the competition approaches.
