Liverpool won their opening NEUAL match - both senior and novice team categories - with Lancaster second. Hull won their match too, the first time they have done so. Liverpool also won the NEUAL novice championships, with Lancaster second again. The league match saw Teesside make their official NEUAL debut. Elsewhere, Warwick made in two wins from two BUTTS matches thus far. Nottingham were second in the match, Oxford third and Cambridge fourth. Birmingham won the BUTTS novice match, Derby second. In the first NEUAL match to feature a real battle for top spot, Liverpool got the defence of their NEUAL crown off to a good start, pipping Lancaster 2161 to 2146. York were a distant third, whilst Teesside were fourth in their first official NEUAL fixture. Sam Evans (Liverpool) top scored in the match with 552 and helped Liverpool to the top of the table, overtaking Bradford on aggregate. The parallel novice match also saw Liverpool win fairly comfortably on 1301 ahead of Lancaster in second place on 1124.
At the start of their third season of NEUALing, Hull won a senior NEUAL match for the first time. Hull's total of 1967, came up against 1878 from Huddersfield and 1801 from Durham. The novice teams finished in the same order.
The NEUAL novice championships, hosted by Bradford on 22nd Nov, were dominated by Liverpool, Lancaster and Leeds. The trio finished 21 points apart, 100 clear of the rest of the field. Liverpool's novices took top spot for the second successive weekend with 1312. Lancaster were second scoring exactly 1300, with Leeds in third place on 1291. Maxwell Brunhart (Leeds) top scored with 468. Bradford and Sheffield were 4th and 5th on 1192 and 1186 as twelve of the fourteen NEUAL clubs were present.
Liverpool, Bradford, Sheffield and Hull all have maximum points after winning their first senior league matches. Lancaster shot the joint second highest score but because they lost to Liverpool, currently sit fifth in the table. In the novice table, Liverpool have maximum points, with Leeds and Lancaster two behind, Leeds shading second spot on aggregate.
Warwick took control of the BUTTS table with an emphatic performance in BUTTS leg 2, scoring a massive 2295, only 1 point short of the BUTTS record. The entire Warwick team (Tom Hall, Jorge Lindley, Luke Rieman and Enrik Nako) broke 570. Warwick finished 38 clear of a chasing pack of Nottingham, Oxford and Cambridge. Nottingham scored 2257, with Oxford beating Cambridge by a single point 2251 against 2250. Nottingham Trent (2235) and Birmingham (2204) were fifth and sixth. Top scorers in the match were Ciprian Zahan and Alex Smith (both Oxford) with 581 and 578. Mid 570s came from Richard Haydock (Nottingham), Robert Gray (Nottingham Trent) and Alex Morell (Birmingham). Rob Littlechild and Tak Ho (both Cambridge) notched 570, with club mate Maryia Karpiyevich one behind.
Birmingham's novices recorded a clear win, with Derby best of the rest and Nottingham finishing third. Third down to sixth place were separated by only 10 points. Top novice individuals were David Jennings (Birmingham) and Alex Chan (Cambridge) both with 514.
In the BUTTS tables, Warwick have a maximum 16 points, with Oxford holding on to second overall on 13. Nottingham have moved up to third on 11. In the novice table, Birmingham have 16, with Derby and Nottingham both on 13, Derby second on aggregate.
SSS match 2 (15th Nov) and SEAL match 1 (22nd/23rd Nov) are still to confirm results. This coming weekend (29th/30th Nov) there is the Warwick University Open Novice Tournament and some matches from NEUAL are scheduled. Also scheduled is SWWU match 1, which is shaping up to be the biggest ever SWWU match, with 7 full teams confirmed, including Bristol and Cardiff.
