Student archers on Olympic Team [19/Jul/24]
2024 is an Olympic year, with the Games taking place in Paris from Friday 26th July to Sunday 11th August. The 70m ranking round will run on Thursday 25th July with the various team and individual H2H events running each day from Sunday 28th July to Sunday 4th August.
The British team has strong student representation, with 4 former BUCS/BUTC winners. Bryony Pitman and Alex Wise won individual golds at BUCS Indoors 2019, a double for Northumbria. Tom Hall and Conor Hall - no relation - were a big part of the hugely successful Warwick and Birmingham teams in the second half of the 2010s, winning stacks of BUCS individual, BUCS team and BUTC medals. One of the Olympic reserves is Thea Rogers, who won individual silver at BUCS Indoors for Cardiff Met as recently as 2023. Tom Hall was actually a novice at Warwick in 2010/11 - their novice team finished a relatively modest 4th in the TOUCAN (then BUTTS) Novice League that season, but Hall is now heading to his second Olympics. The other two members of the 2024 team are Penny Healey and Megan Havers, both of whom are still teenagers and could easily end up as student archers in the future.
On the paralympic team, you can also add Phoebe Paterson-Pine, formerly of Worcester.
UKSAA strongly recommends utilising any archery publicity from the Olympics to help recruit beginners in September. When else is archery on the telly, especially if the GB individuals or teams go deep in the competition.
As well as having an impact on the Olympic team, student archery pushes out a significant volume of archers into the wider ArcheryGB ecosystem. ArcheryGB recently published a simplification of its membership structure for 2024/25 onwards and confirmed membership costs for the next three years. University club affiliations for the 2023/24 season cost £180. Over the next 3 seasons, they will rise to £200, then £210, then £220. Overall, this is an increase of 22%, but the rise is spread over 4 years and crucially, bulk membership remains in place.
