To put it mildly, there have been a lot of regional league results published recently. This article reviews the 4th, 5th and 6th rounds of NEUAL fixtures, plus SSS match 3. Review of the 4th matches in BUTTS and SEAL will follow shortly. NEUAL and SSS are in action again this weekend.
In other news, the list of teams competing at BUTC has recently been confirmed. If any of the 32 teams intend to withdraw, they must contact Glen West at Derby as soon as possible so that the next team on the waiting list can be notified.
Firstly in SSS, Edinburgh leapfrogged Aberdeen on 20th February, to go back top of the SSS table by a point with one league match to play. SSS Indoors does not count towards the league standings. Edinburgh had to draft in several more experienced squad members to make sure of it however, and a string of 550s took Edinburgh to a total of 2213. Strathclyde finished second for the second match in a row, meaning Aberdeen were third, the pair just under 2100, with Napier in fourth. Aberdeen saw their one point lead became a one point deficit and should Edinburgh field a strengthened side again in match 4, they would be overwhelming favourites to take the league title. Johanna Meyer (Edinburgh) top scored in the match on 559.
Edinburgh's novices won very convincingly with 1594, with Fiona Inglis (Edinburgh) on 547. Tom MacArthur (Heriot-Watt) scored 554 to lift his side to second in the novice match, with Napier third. Edinburgh have a six point lead with one to go in the novice table. Second place is currently a three way tie between Napier, Strathclyde and Heriot-Watt.
In NEUAL, the two January matches (E4 and W4) were won by Bradford on 2072 (against York second and Huddersfield third) and Lancaster on 2225 (against Salford). Both novice matches finished in the same order. There were big scores from David Shaw (York) on 574 and Tom Wilson (Lancaster) on 573, whilst novice Freddie Marshall (Bradford) scored 534.
The fifth set of matches (E5, W5 and N3) took place the weekend after Telford. Leeds scored 2124 to beat York by 85, Christopher Draper (Leeds) pitching in a 560 to top score across this set of fixtures. Keele scored 2033 to finish a long way clear of MMU Cheshire. In the Northern conference fixture, Teesside fell 6 points short of 1800, but still won comfortably, with Sunderland beating Durham in the mid 1500s. York, Keele and Teesside won the novice fixtures.
The sixth set of matches (E6 and W6) saw senior and novice wins for Bradford and Liverpool, the pair just breaking 2100 and 2200 respectively. Matthew McCormack and Richard Jones (both Liverpool) notched 565 and 562. Bradford beat Hull, whilst Liverpool were well clear of MMU Cheshire, who themselves beat Salford.
With one set of fixtures left (and following the application of some penalties) Bradford currently lead the senior NEUAL table, but Liverpool - the only unbeaten side in the division - are likely to go top once they complete their game in hand. NEUAL Indoors (at MMU Cheshire on 12th Mar) will be crucial. In the novice league, a second place at the Indoor Champs would be enough for Bradford to guarantee the overall title.
See current NEUAL and SSS standings. This coming weekend (27th Feb) features the seventh batch of NEUAL fixtures and SSS match 4.
BUTC entry levels have varied wildly across the leagues, with NEUAL (4/16) and SSS (2/8) having only a quarter of the their clubs represented at BUTC. With SWWU completely absent, BUTTS and SEAL will contribute 15 of the 21 institutions.
