Before Christmas, UKSAA will be bringing its coverage of regional league action from recent weekends fully up to date. First up is SSS and match 2, held on Sat 5th Dec at Strathclyde. Then it will be SEAL matches 1 and 2 (wins for London) and pre-Christmas NEUAL (calculators at the ready).
Jordan Wilson (Aberdeen) top scored in the match (by a full 20) with 562, helping Aberdeen to 2139 and a winning margin of nearly 70 points. Home side Strathclyde managed to finish 8 ahead of Edinburgh with 2070 as against Edinburgh's 2062. The fact that Edinburgh dropped two points means that Aberdeen now have the outright SSS lead going in to the new calendar year. Strathclyde's second place in the match means they go third in the table, overtaking Napier.
This is the first instance that UKSAA could find of Edinburgh either finishing as low as third in a SSS match or losing to Strathclyde. Edinburgh do not field their strongest possible team in SSS matches - although in previous years they have bolstered their options from time to time. As they have also not entered the E-League, it is therefore difficult to assess Edinburgh's "true" strength. In the next editorial, we'll see that Southampton have applied the same strategy in SEAL matches, but the E-League is a bit more instructive here.
Edinburgh's novices were comfortable novice match winners with 1464, ahead of Strathclyde's 1317. Heriot-Watt were third. Lisa Mei Kompfner (Edinburgh) was top novice on 507. Edinburgh's lead here is now three points.
