SSS title race back on [15/Feb/26]

SSS match 4 was held on 24th January and was a Worcester. Edinburgh won the match. Heriot-Watt and St Andrews closed the gap on Dundee, who are still top. Match 5, however, will now be a real fight for the title.

Edinburgh ran away with the overall recurve team match win. They scored 986 and were 80+ points clear of a three way fight for second place. Selin Busoni (Edinburgh) top scored in the match on 277. Match hosts Heriot-Watt grabbed second spot with 904, edging out Strathclyde's 902, despite 267 from James O'Donnel. St Andrews were a close fourth on 894.

Dundee had appeared to be cruising to a fourth consecutive SSS title. Here, they stumbled to 6th place in this match and their league lead has been slashed from 5 points to just 1. With match 5 remaining, Dundee have 54 points, with Heriot-Watt on 53 and St Andrews on 51. Strathclyde are fourth on 48. A win in match 5 will see Dundee as champions - as long as they finish ahead of Heriot-Watt, that will probably be enough.

Heriot-Watt's possible route to the overall SSS title would involve beating Dundee in match 5, either by 2 places - or by 1 place and at least 66 points. St Andrews are in 3rd place and 3 points behind the leaders, but could still have a say. They will need to channel the spirit of Imperial in 2018, who grabbed that season's SEAL title in exactly those circumstances.

In the novice match, Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt were first and second by a distance on 556 and 537. Third placed St Andrews were on 489. Derek Warwick (Heriot-Watt) was top individual on 222. This result leaves Heriot-Watt on 59 league points and almost home and dry. St Andrews and Strathclyde are next, both on 51.

The second half of match 5 has just been completed (on Sat 14th Feb) and results will be published when available. SSS clubs will be at the BUCS Northern Qualifier alongside several English clubs in Aberdeen - the most northerly venue on the circuit. There is also a separate SSS Indoor Championships in St Andrews on 7th March. This doesn't contribute to SSS league standings.
