Catch up continues with BUTC [02/Dec/25]

It's disc o'clock!

Bids to host BUTC 2026 are due by 13:00 on Friday 12th December. Bid documents should be emailed to the UKSAA inbox by then. See the announcement on the BUTC Tournament Info page.

Could your club host BUTC? Well you ideally need a hall that is at least 40m wide. Sixteen bosses is the preferred set up and each boss should ideally have a lane 2.4m wide to fit 3 archers at a time - that's 38.4m already. BUTC has gone very slightly smaller in the past, but obviously there is a limit! Then add a little bit of wiggle room at either end of the hall. As for how deep the hall should be, well the gap from the back wall to netting to bosses, then 18m, a 1m gap back to the waiting line, 3m deep boxes for the team round and enough room to actually move about at the back. It's the best part of 25-30m.

If you want to drill into a bit more detail about the hosting requirements, check out the BUTC Hosting Info page. As things stand, the preferred weekend for BUTC is the 21st/22nd March. This just about avoids BUCS Championship dates and the Easter holidays.

UKSAA is still co-ordinating some elements of BUTC, although The Editor is trying to decouple one from the other. Clearly there has been a delay to the process this year, for which the Editor is responsible and apologises. As a general note however, securing a venue for this competition has become tougher in recent years. UKSAA will explore all avenues to secure the event for 2026, 2027 and beyond.

After winning silver in 2022 and bronze in 2023, Sheffield finally got their hands on the Werner Beiter trophy in 2025. They beat Birmingham by a single hit in the final. The event was held in Exeter.

BUTC is both the easiest and most difficult national student event for a team to win. You can just turn up on the day, it technically doesn't matter where in the field you qualify. Win all your matches (usually 5) on the hit miss discs and that will do it. You've got to win them all though. Slip up just once and the golds will be going elsewhere. Music! Commentary! The roar of the crowd! Get involved.
