Before we get to regional wins for Dundee and Leicester, some national competition updates. BUCS have published the list of entries for the Regional Qualifiers, however there appear to be a few problems with the lists, so please check carefully. Details in BUCS Indoor section. Elsewhere, BUTC still does not have confirmed hosts or date. Organisers are still working to remedy the situation. E-League Round 3 (Dec/Jan) has now finished and scores must be submitted by 7th Feb. Round 4 (Feb) has started. Results from Round 2 (Nov) still have not been published.
On the weekend of the 27th January, Dundee posted a total of 2227 to win SSS match 4 at a canter. Alex Lai and Misha Pavlov (both Dundee) scored 568 and 564 to help create a winning margin of 128, as nearest challengers Strathclyde fell 1 point short of 2100. St Andrews were third, back on 2047. UWS were the last team to clear 2000, with 2019. Elsewhere in the match, Grace Goh (Edinburgh) added 560 for her side, who finished fifth.
In the SSS novice match, 30 points covered the top three, with Edinburgh on top with 1406. St Andrews were second, just ahead of Heriot-Watt. Top individual was Ryan Tung (St Andrews) with 504. In the compound match, Edinburgh and Abertay finished 1st and 2nd for the fourth match out of four.
The top 5 teams in the league finished in the same order in this match, so there was no movement at the top of the table. In the overall SSS table, Dundee now have a 3 league point lead and look heavy favourites to retain their title. Five different clubs have won the previous 5 SSS crowns: Edinburgh (2018), St Andrews (2019), Napier (2020), Heriot-Watt (2022), Dundee (2023). To win in 2024 and defend their title, Dundee need to finish at least 3rd in match 5, but they also have a big aggregate advantage (280) over Stratclyde, so 4th might well be enough. In the novice table, Heriot-Watt's lead has been cut from 6 to 4 points, but they are in pole position to win the SSS novice title for the first time.
In TOUCAN match 2, hosts Leicester won the fixture ahead of Coventry. Leicester notched 2038, with Coventry on 1994. Hitting a score of 587, Callum Piggot (Coventry) was the top scorer in the match by nearly 40 points. The match also featured the first apperance of Worcester at a BUTTS fixture. They didn't have a complete team present in this fixture, but became the 14th team involved in the TOUCAN league set up.
One part of TOUCAN div 1 match 2 has taken place as Nottingham played host to Birmingham, De Montfort and Cambridge. That part of the match was actually the first regional action of 2024 as it took place on 20th January. The other segments of this match are scheduled to be hosted by Derby and Warwick. The TOUCAN league set up will change to 8 in the main division and 6 in div 2.
See latest results and updated tables on the SSSS 2023/24 page and the TOUCAN 2023/24 page.
This coming weekend (3rd/4th Feb) sees two parts of TOUCAN match 3 taking place (at Oxford and Cambridge), whilst SWWU match 5 happens in Plymouth.
