Before we delve in SSS' very early start to the season, two reminders. Portsmouths shot during September and October can be submitted for Round 1 of the E-League, but the submission deadline is the Saturday 5th - tomorrow! Bids to host BUTC should be with UKSAA by Monday 7th.
This year SSS has increased in size again. West of Scotland joined last year and now a new team at Abertay (in Dundee) have joined, taking a full part in match 1. There also clubs thought to be starting in Glasgow and Stirling, plus ex league organiser Douglas Jardine is at Borders College.
As a result SSS has altered its points structure to start at 15 rather than 10. In an earlier, entirely separate development, SSS has added an extra league match to its programme, so with 5 matches and a maximum 15 points per match, SSS has ended up with the same format as SEAL. Not content with that, SSS have also initiated a compound league with a team of 2 format, similar to BUCS, although in match 1 only Strathclyde fielded 2 compounds.
In match 1 itself, Edinburgh held off a spirited challenge from Napier and Aberdeen to win the curtain raiser on 2161, including three low 550s. Kayleigh Ivanov (Napier) top scored in the match with 563, leading her team to second place on 2140, with Aberdeen not that far behding, taking third spot on 2114. Behind the leading trio, there was a drop of 200 points to Dundee in fourth place.
Abertay fielded a full side for the first time and beat last season's newbies West of Scotland, albeit the two sides were slightly adrift in eighth and ninth spot. Nine complete teams of 4 and 10 insitutions in total are both record highs for SSS. In the novice match however UWS and Abertay had some success, finishing 6th and 7th out of 9. The novice match was comfortably won by Edinburgh, with Heriot-Watt edging out Dundee for second spot.
See SSS 2016/17 page and a new page in the Club Directory for Abertay.
Not content with an October start to the season, SSS match 2 follows on 5th November. Also this weekend is the first batch of NEUAL fixtures, which follows NUTC. This tournament had a Roses feel, with York A beating Lancaster A in the final and York B beating Lancaster B in the bronze match.
