In NEUAL League Match 9 in the 2011/12 season, Northumbria finished well off the pace in third, struggling just over 1700. It would prove to be their last NEUAL appearance for six years. With no shows at their remaining fixtures, they finished 12th out of 12 that season and the club soon disappeared off the radar altogether. Fast forward to March 2018 and NEUAL Indoors saw a guest team from a re-born Northumbria post a total, albeit a modest one, the club flickering back into life.
Now fast forward again to NUTC in November 2018 and that flicker has become a full on roar. Northumbria qualified in second place (including top individual qualifiers Bryony Pitman and Alex Wise) and went on to win the event, beating top seeds and hosts Bradford in the final. Full results from NUTC have not yet been published, but will appear on here as soon as they do. Northumbria will join NEUAL's Northern Conference in 2018/19, but MMU Cheshire are not slated to compete this season.
NEUAL's first set of league matches take place this weekend, Sat 10th/Sun 11th, alongside the opening league matches in BUTTS and SWWU. Five teams were legitimate NEUAL title contenders last year, but none of those are in action this weekend. Sheffield, 6th last year, start against Hull, whilst it's Keele v Salford and Sunderland v Teesside v Durham. Defending champions York start next week, Northumbria start (again) the week after.
In the BUTTS and SWWU matches this weekend, Loughborough, Nottingham and Swansea are the hosts - Warwick and Exeter are defending champions.
There's a correction to results from NEUAL Outdoors 2018. The error was limited to the UKSAA website however, the right sets of medals were handed out on the day! Bethany Woodcock-Dexter should have been included in Central Lancashire's total. Her 724, shot on a York rather than a Hereford, pushes Central Lancashire up from third place to first and makes them NEUAL Outdoor champions. York and Bradford move down to second and third. This was UCLan's first win in a NEUAL-wide fixture and reflects a very strong year where they recorded two top 5 team finishes at BUCS events and came within a handful of points taking the NEUAL title themselves.
