For the second year in succession St Andrews won the opening SSS league match of the season. A total of 2165 was enough to record a 14 point winning margin over Edinburgh who could only muster 2151 in response. The top two were 150 clear of the field, with the teams from 3rd down to 6th split by just over 50 points. None of those teams cleared 2000 however, with Strathclyde third on 1998. The SSS 2018/19 tables have been updated.
Top scorer in the match was Andrew Smith (Napier) who hit 572, just ahead of Guillaume Andrieux (Glasgow) on 570. Although it was a solo effort, this still represents Glasgow's SSS debut. Elsewhere, Euan Ogilvie (Strathclyde) and Andreas Nicolaou (Napier) both scored 561.
Edinburgh won the novice match on 1453, with Heriot-Watt second on 1380 and Napier leading the pack in a distant third. Remarkably, given that it is still October, Jessie Yin (Edinburgh) scored 516.
Uniquely, SSS also run a parallel compound league. Seven teams were represented - a new record - but only Edinburgh and Strathclyde had a full team of 2. Ove Schoeppner and Beth Martel (both Edinburgh) scored 586 and 579, whilst Robyn Geddes (Glasgow) took third spot for her side, despite a solo 578.
In its early stages then, SSS looks like being a straight two-way fight between a resurgent St Andrews and traditional powerhouse Edinburgh. The SSS match that was cancelled (formerly Sat 3rd Nov in Strathclyde) has now been rescheduled. Heriot-Watt will host on Sat 19th Jan. The next SSS match now is on Sat 17th Nov.
