The 30th Summer Universiade in Naples has now finished. Overall the UK won 10 medals at the event, although sadly none were in archery. South Korea won 4 of the 10 available golds. See ianseo results page.
In the ranking round, the best performances came in the compound section, with Kai Thomas-Prause and Sarah Moon both impressing. Sarah Moon shot 692 and qualified an impressive 5th, with Isabelle Carpenter 674/20th. Kai Thomas-Prause scored 698 and was 12th, with Stuart Taylor 10 points behind in 28th. In recurve Hannah Burnage and Philippa Taylor were 41st and 47th on 579 and 553. William Pike was 27th on 636, with Vladimir Hurban hitting 612/44th for Slovakia.
Pike's seeding meant he avoided the preliminary gents round that trimmed the field to 64, before winning the fifth set 28-24 to win the first round match 6-4. Pike held on against Yuta Ishii (Japan) seeded 6th, 3-3 after 3 sets. Shooting two 26s to finish was not enough and he (Pike) lost 7-3. Ishii only dropped 8 points in 15 arrows and would go on to win the individual bronze. Vladimir Hurban (Slovakia) did lose 6-0 in the round of 64, but the result was harsh as each end was by 1 or 2 points. Hannah Burnage upset her higher ranked opponent with a 6-0 win, albeit three close sets. Like club-mate Pike, she also lost in the round of 32 to a Japanese archer 7-3, although Burnage did lead 3-1. Pip Taylor had led in her round of 64 match 4-0, but saw her higher ranked Chinese opponent found her form and turned the match around, winning the crucial 3rd set 25-24, before going on to win the match 6-4. The result denied Taylor a match against Choi Mi-Sun (S Korea).
In the gents compound matches, Stuart Taylor won his preliminary match to take him to the last 32. Kai Thomas-Prause's seeding saw him there automatically. Had both men won, they would have faced each other, but unfortunately both lost, Taylor 139-146, and Thomas-Prause 135-144. Muhammed Yetim (Turkey) who beat Taylor went on to win silver. In the ladies, both Isabelle Carpenter and Sarah Moon went directly in to the round of 32. Carpenter did the damage early in her first round/round of 32, 4 points up after two ends, before winning 133-131 against a higher ranked opponent. In the round of 16 Carpenter held on doggedly against 4th seed Andrea Becerra Arizaga, but two 29s to finish from her Mexican opponent meant she lost 139-142. Becerra Arizaga went on to win gold. There was disappointment for Sarah Moon however. Despite being seeded 5th (vs 28th seed from Malaysia) and opening with an end of 30, Moon ended up losing 139-141.
Women's recurve British team placed 18th, two places outside the cut for the knock-out rounds. There was no British gents team, but the mixed team were seeded 20th, but lost to 13th seeds Spain 0-6, although sets 2 and 3 were lost by a single point. The 3 British compound teams all came in the Round of 16. The men's compound team was ranked 10th but lost 153-147 to 7th seeds India. The women's and mixed compound teams qualified 4th and 6th, before beating Ukraine and France respecitvely by 2 points in either case. Both then lost their QFs to Chinese Taipei (aka Taiwan) 147-153 and Kazakhstan 149-152 in the QFs. Kazakhstan were seeded 14th and had already upset 3rd seeds South Africa.
And so, to pizza. Although there were no medals to toast there were some strong performances throughout the team. The Summer Universiade 2021 will be held in Chengdu, China and the 2023 edition will be hosted in the Russian city of Ekaterinburg.
The 720 was only created as an All Unis category, following its use at the BUCS H2H event. However at that point scores from the Universiades (and previously at the World Uni Archery Champs) were not retrospecitvely fitted in, an oversight now being corrected. Kai Thomas-Prause and Sarah Moon both set records at Lilleshall with 698 and 691. In Naples they scored 698 (again) and 692. Tim Mundon's 691, shot way back in 2003 was (albeit retrospectively) an All Unis record for 16 years. Claire Trenamen's 666 from 2000 would have stood until Naomi Jones' 687 at Lilleshall in 2013.
On the recurve side Naomi Folkard shot 637 also in 2003, in this case a score which has never been bettered and which overtakes the existing record of 621. Danny Clifford shot 650 in 2009, a score matched by Ashe Morgan in 2016. Tom Hall scored 656 two years ago in Taipei, replacing the 651 from one year ago in Lilleshall.
The new/old records will be available in the All Unis records spreadsheet imminently.
