This week sees the archery part of the 30th Summer Universiade, taking place in Naples. This summer also sees the first run of a new summer-long competition, Student National Rankings, being run by BUCS.

The British squad in Italy comprises 3 recurves William Pike, Hannah Burnage and Philippa Taylor (Warwick, Warwick and Derby) plus 4 compounds Kai Thomas-Prause, Stuart Taylor, Isabelle Carpenter and Sarah Moon (Warwick, Keele, Sheffield Hallam and Nottingham Trent). Also there, albeit shooting for Slovakia, is Vladimir Hurban (Edinburgh).

This is archery's first appearance in the Summer Universiade as a compulsory sport, rather than a free-stading World University Archery Champs. The next Summer Universiades look like they will be in Chengdu 2021 and Yekaterinburg 2023. Additionally, from 2019 onwards the age restriction has been brought down from a maximum of 28 to a maximum of 25 years old. The maximum number in each category (men/women recurve/compound) has been reduced from 3 to 2, meaning that the UK has an almost full contingent.

BUCS EMG are running Student National Rankings over the summer. The system is not dissimilar to the Archery GB ranking system.

Scores must be shot on a standard, minimum 6 dozen Outdoor round, e.g. WA1440, WA720, York/Hereford, St George/Albion. As the organisers have apparently had to point out, a Portsmouth is a 5 dozen indoor round and therefore very much not eligible. You can have shot them in the 12 months preceding 30th August 2019 (but probably this summer) and they must be submitted by 30th September.

The first 3 scores (per bowstyle) will be accepted, so this means that best practice is to wait until the end of the shooting period, calculate your three best handicap scores and submit those. Rankings will then be calculated from the handicaps, with the results presumably in early October. For full info, including a link to a handicap calculator, see the Student National Rankings page.
