Combined BUTTS Champs [08/Mar/19]

All 13 of the clubs involved in the BUTTS league set up converged on Derby on 3rd March to compete in what was presumably the Midlands league's largest ever event, with 179 starters. Results from the championships doubled as the final set of match results in BUTTS league tables.

Warwick and Birmingham both put in their respective highest scores of the season, in a brilliant finale. On the day, there was little suspense in the destination of the overall league title, but the Indoor Championship itself was a thriller. Birmingham had four archers all at 573 or above as they piled up a tally of 2317. Even this was not quite enough as Warwick's team total was a 5 points higher at 2322 to complete an indoor sweep. Nottingham and Loughborough have fought an intriguing battle for third. Loughborough made a strong start to the season, but stumbled in match 3 leaving the Champs as a shoot out. As between 1st and 2nd, there was a 5 point gap between 3rd and 4th, with Nottingham on 2250 to Loughborough's 2245 - averaging over 560 per person. Nottingham finished 1 league point (27/26) and 1 aggregate point (11,060/11,059) ahead of Loughborough.

Oxford's 2212 saw them finish 5th and the Dark Blues were fifth overall. De Montfort were next on 2164, their highest score of the season, beating three Div 1 clubs and winning the Div 2 round by 120. Div 2 clubs Leicester and Coventry were behind Derby, Trent and Cambridge - but not by much.

Warwick end the season on a maximum 40 points, with Birmingham's run of silvers leaving them on 35. Nottingham have 27, one ahead of Loughborough. De Montfort won all 3 Div 2 fixtures to end on 15 points, with Northampton and Leicester on 9.

As ever, with BUTTS Indoors, there were a lot of very strong individual performances. Top recurve was William Pike (Warwick) who scored an enormous 596, only 2 off the All Unis record. Rebekah Tipping and Christopher Avins (both Birmingham) fired in a 587 and 583. Sherman Ip (Warwick) scored exactly 580 with team-mate Enrik Nako one behind. In the lower half of the 570s it gets more congested with Jamal Rahman and Evelina D'Arcy (both Birmingham), Arthur Coveney and Chris Cooper (both Loughborough), plus Pip Taylor (Derby) all between 574 and 572. With a 569 and 563 came Nottingham duo Elizabeth Elmer and Max Harding. James Jeffs (Warwick) notched 567, whilst Nina Caulton (Leicester) was the 15th archer to break 560 on 562.

In the parallel novice match, Birmingham were winners with a team of 4 total of 2077. Warwick (2017), Nottingham (2005) and Derby (1993) were the chasing pack. Joe Last (Nottingham Trent) beat Yang Ma (Birmingham) to top novice, 547 to 543, with Katharina Blum (Loughborough) on 537 and Pawel Rymarz (Oxford) on 530. Birmingham's novices end the season on 37 points stretching their lead from 6 points. Cambridge and Oxford stayed second and third overall, although both lost ground at the Indoors.

The BUTTS 2018/19 page shows results and updated tables in full. Warwick's seniors and Birmingham's novices win their respective 8th BUTTS league title. Warwick have now drawn level with Cambridgeon 8 senior league titles.

Integration of some or hopefully all of the Div 2 teams in to the main BUTTS division is set to be a core topic at the BUTTS AGM that will be held at BUTTS Outdoor Champs - date/location TBC. All sides could benefit from the multiple joinees, but hosting difficulties (that old chestnut) look like a significant issue to be surmounted.

Once again BUTTS clubs have set high standards, with no fewer than 4 clubs averaging over 2200. BUTC's entry deadline is/was 13:00 today. In the last 5 years BUTTS have provided 26/40 BUTC quarter-finalists, 17/20 semi-finalists and 10/10 finalists.

Additional paragraph added 13/Mar/19

Chris Norwood (De Montfort) tied the All Unis record for gents barebow, scoring 550. This was also the score shot by Matt Waters (Nottingham), also in Derby, exactly one month ago. Both Norwood and Waters beat the record of Ollie Hartfield who shot 544 for Loughborough at the 2017 edition of BUTTS Indoors.
