De Montfort, Warwick wins [14/Feb/19]

BUTTS league leaders De Montfort and Warwick won the BUTTS div 2 and main division matches held on 2nd Feb and 9th Feb. Northampton, Derby and Warwick hosted as two All Unis records were broken.

Elsewhere there are some results that have not yet appeared, specifically E-League Round 3, SSS match 5, NEUAL round 5 (matches E5, W5, N4) and NEUAL round 6 (E6, W6, N5).

In the BUTTS div 2 fixture, De Montfort won very comfortably with 2105, the highest score yet in one of these matches. Coventry were second on 1977 and hosts Northampton third. De Montfort now have a maximum 10/10 league points, with Northampton staying second with 7. Top individual in the match was Nina Coulton (Leicester) on 548, one ahead of Joanna Clapka (De Montfort). Top novice was Matt Guiver (De Montfort) on 510.

A week later, Warwick put in a dominant performance, racking up a team total of 2319 and with it, a winning margin of 61. Warwick's team was Sherman Ip 586, William Pike 582, Enrik Nako 576, James Jeffs 575, with Hannah Burnage and Sarah Allaway missing out, despite notching 570 and 567. Ip's 586 was joint top score in the match with Pip Taylor (Derby). A 583 from Max Harding (Nottingham) and 580 from Rebekah Tipping (Birmingham) meant no less than 5 archers in the 580s. Jamal Rahman (Birmingham), Chris Cooper and Arthur Coveney (Loughborough) were all in the high 570s. Elizabeth Elmer (Nottingham) scored exactly 560.

Birmingham were second in the match with 2258, but they were made to sweat by Nottingham, who rattled in 2251, only 7 points behind, as Nottingham's strong second half of the BUTTS season continues. Loughborough were stronger than in match three and rallied to 2218, just enough to keep them clear of a good team performance from Oxford. The Dark Blues broke 2200 without any individual breaking 560, Oliver Doshi-Phillips just a line-cutter away.

In the parallel novice match, Cambridge were top with a team of 4 score of 2044, nearly 30 ahead of Oxford, with league leaders Birmingham third on 1969. There were several very strong individuals. Joe Last was top novice and the top Trent score outright, with 554. Pawel Rymarz (Oxford) was exactly 20 behind.

All main and division 2 BUTTS teams will take part at the BUTTS Indoor Champs in Derby on 2nd March. Both matches will run in parallel. Both league campaigns will conclude here.

Warwick (by 4) and De Montfort (by 3) now lead, see the BUTTS 2018/19 page. Warwick are on 32/32 points - anything in the top 4 at the Indoors would guarantee the senior title. Four 2nd places so far effectively assure Birmingham of second spot overall. There is, however, a genuine battle for third. Since the turn of the year, Nottingham have wiped out a 3 point deficit to catch up to Loughborough, with both on 21 points (and virtually identical aggregates) - a 240 arrow shoot off awaits. Unusually there is a proper battle to avoid the wooden spoon as well - often the side at the bottom is well adrift by this stage.

In the novice table, Cambridge's win in match 4 and Birmingham's third place, means that Birmingham's lead over the Light Blues is down from 4 to 2 points, 29 to 27, with Oxford on 25. Cambridge would need to finish 3 places ahead of Birmingham (or 2 places and 154 points) to win the BUTTS novice title for the first time since 2008.
