Nottingham got their season off to the best possible start by firing in 2257 to easily win the first BUTTS league match of the season with an impressive cushion of more than 50 points over Loughborough and Warwick. Warwick, who were undefeated in BUTTS last season, slipped to third, 2202-2196 behind Loughborough, dropping a potentially crucial league point in the process. Chris Norburn top scored for Loughborough with 577. Birmingham were adrift in fourth despite a perfectly respectable 2107.
Nottingham were led home by George Harding's 585. Harding was at Plymouth last year and won gents recurve individual prize at BUSA Indoors. Gaining an archer of Harding's quality makes a massive difference but it would be wrong to think that Nottingham simply got lucky. The rest of their winning side was Amy Middleton-Gear (571), Rhys Rhodes (554) and James Carr (547), the same trio who picked up BUTC bronze in March. Nottingham's novices also won the novice match easily and the club produced six novices scoring over 400 (plus another on 399) in competition conditions, in early November.
Warwick did manage to get the better of Nottingham in the ELeague, the pair finishing second and third ahead of the other English universities in the Sept/Oct round. Edinburgh extended their winning run to nine consecutive rounds. George Harding took maximum points in gents recurve as Jenny Jeppsson (Edinburgh) did the same in ladies recurve.
Elsewhere, Kent and Essex made their SEAL debuts together at Essex against each other and Reading. Kent ran out winners with 2088, a hundred clear of Essex with Reading trailing distantly in third. Essex did pick up maximum points in the novice match, well clear of Kent and Reading. Top scores in the match were a 571 from Sam Perkins (Kent) and a 569 from Michael Judd (Essex).
