Warwick and SUS-strength Edinburgh shot virtually identical scores over the last weekend to win in their respective league matches. Edinburgh scored a remarkable 2265 on home soil despite not fielding a full strength side. Felix Pretis' booming 584 and a 571 from Erik Rowbotham were ably supported by Naomi Jones and former Imp Lizzie Williams. Whilst 2265 is a great score, the winning margin (or yawning chasm if you prefer) was an astonishing 521 - Edinburgh's fourth team score was barely required. Strathclyde laboured to 1744 whilst Aberdeen only fielded three recurves in total, none of whom were novices, Strathclyde picking up second novice team by default.
In contrast Warwick's 2265 netted them a paltry winning margin of "only" 68. Chris Wells top scored again with Phil King also in the 570s, Alex Stuart and Ian Rogers making up the quartet. Cambridge's total of 2197 was a good start to the season for them, beating their old rivals Oxford who despite breaking 2160 for the second time placed third out of four for the second time. Hosts Birmingham propped up the senior match on 2124, but won the novice match easily, Warwick second.
Whilst the totals required to win these two matches might have been very similar, the difference in the overall strength of SUS and BUTTS could hardly be starker. Both leagues have fixtures next week as Aberdeen play host to St Andrews and Heriot-Watt and Nottingham will look to follow up their opening day success with a win at home to Oxford, Derby and Birmingham.
