Bath won a nailbiting opening SWWU match with 2107 narrowly beating Swansea who notched 2094. Top scorers were Dan Maskell (Bath) with 561 and Rhodri Curnow (Swansea) 556. The team result hinged on a SWWU rule which says that SWWU senior sides must be mixed. Swansea's top four scores were all gents so the fourth highest score of 524 was replaced with a 480, from novice Gemma Hockey, comfortably the best novice score of the match. However this saw the Welsh side's total fall from 2138 to 2094, and past Bath's 2107. For Bath, Amy Lavery's 537 was the second highest score. Exeter were also affected by the mixed team ruling, although it did not affect the match outcome as their team score fell from 1956 to 1940. In the novice match Bath ran out easy winners Swansea, narrowly ahead of Exeter.
What does this match teach us? Well firstly, that Bath and Swansea will be hard to separate in SWWU 08/09 as they were in 07/08. Perhaps more importantly it shines a light on the numbers of competing ladies, not just in SWWU, but nationwide. Here we are in the 21st century, but nearly half of all team scores shot in league matches so far this season have been all male. Round 1 of the ELeague rarely gives a complete snapshot, but to score an individual recurve point took a 556 for a gent and 424 for a lady. With approximately a 2:1 ratio at the major championships, it is worth remembering that there the same number of ladies medals to win as there are gents, so if your club is looking for a shortcut to win medals, make sure you don't lose all your lady novices.
