Imperial and Surrey won their opening SEAL fixtures with both winning scores nestled around the 2160 mark. Whilst Surrey fought off London by 34 points, with Southampton further back, Imperial's winning margin was eight times greater as they beat Brunel. There has been much recent discussion on the SEAL Facebook Group about no shows for matches and the effect that can have on the table and even on the credibility of the league. It was therefore particularly disappointing to see Sussex record a DNS in this match. They prop up both senior and novice tables.
Surrey's 2158 was led by 556 from Matt Sharpe whilst ex-Birmingham archer Simon Roer shot 548 for London. In the end Surrey had slightly too much for London, but this was by far London's best SEAL performance for several years. Southampton's 1962 was a distant third, but they did win a hotly contested novice match with 979 against London's 974 and Surrey's 961.
In the weekend's other game, Imperial scored 2163 to lead the senior SEAL table by a narrow margin. Jordan Muscatello was thirty points clear of the field with 569 to drive Imperial's total past Surrey's. Brunel were never really in the hunt on 1891, but their novice team performed very creditably indeed with a score of 1215, the second highest novice team total in this first round of SEAL fixtures. Unfortunately for Brunel, Imperial's 1272 was the highest, but although Brunel's novices site fourth in the table after one match, they will hope to be inamongst the medals come March.
The next SEAL fixture is Sussex v Kent v Surrey.
