BUCS Outdoor 2022 Champs [24/Jun/22]

BUCS Outdoors 2022 took place at Lilleshall NSC over the weekend of the 11th and 12th June. Results from the WA720/H2H and WA900 were combined to both event contributed equally to determine the overall winners.

Saturday WA720 and H2H

This year the order of the events was reversed with the WA720 and H2H on the Saturday. Novices shot in a separate KO bracket. This is the 9th running of the competition, which first ran in 2013. As in 2021, barebows shot at 50m.

In ladies recurve second seed Shauna Punjabi (Royal Holloway) came from 0-4 down to beat top seed Louisa Piper (Nottingham) 6-4 in a thriller. The pivotal third set saw Punjabi win 27-26 to get what would prove a crucial foothold in the match. The bronze medal match was nip and tuck all the way with Ffion Edgeley (Loughborough) and Lauren Rawlings (Chester) 3-3 after 3 sets. Edgeley won the 4th decisively and tied the 5th to take bronze. In contrast, both semi-finals had been quite straightforward 6-0 affairs, Piper against Edgeley and Punjabi against Rawlings. The pick of the QFs was Ffion Edgeley against 12th seed Zoe Harley (Oxford). Harley had already ousted 5th seed Hannah Evans (Nottingham), winning the last two sets for a 6-4, carrying that form into leading Edgeley 4-0 in the QF. Edgeley turned it around to 4-4 and when the 5th set finished 27 a piece, a shoot off beckoned. Harley knocked in a 10, but it wasn't enough as Edgeley found the X. Another upset was caused by Jodie Green (Warwick) who qualified 14th. Green thumped 3rd seed Charlotte Llewellyn-Smith (Durham) 6-0 before being unable to replicate that form in a 6-0 defeat to Lauren Rawlings. In the other QF's Louisa Piper beat club mate and Charlotte Chard (Nottigham) 7-3 and Shauna Punjabi beat Hannah Burnage (Warwick) 6-4.

In gents recurve James Woodgate (Warwick), seeded first beat Tom Braxton (Leeds) in a match that, like the ladies final, went the distance 6-4. Braxton took the first set with a 30. The middle three sets were all decided 27-26, with James Woodgate taking two of them. In the fifth, yet another Woodgate 27 took the gold. James Woodgate shared the first set of his semi-final with Ugo So (Birmingham) but went on to win 7-1. Tom Braxton shared the first two sets against teammate and 10th seed Changsheng Wang (Leeds) before going on to win 6-2. So beat Wang 7-3 in the bronze medal match. Wang had previously beaten James Woodgate (Warwick) in a wildly fluctuating match 6-5, X-8 in the shoot-off. Chris Woodgate had beaten Callum Newlands (Southampton) in a shoot off in the previous round. The other three QFs were all straightforward 6-0s, James Woodgate beating 8th seed Max Harding (Nottingham), Ugo So beating 13th seed James Gardner (Warwick) and Tom Braxton beating 11th seed Dominic Kelsey (Nottingham). Gardner had upset 4th seed Ben Evans (Loughborough) in a shoot-off, whilst Kelsey had overwhelmed 6th seed Yang Pei (Oxford). Jack Wells (Sheffield), who qualified in 39th upset 26th seed James Phillips (Lancaster) and then - in the biggest ranking upset of the day - 7th seed Callum Henfrey (Oxford) before losing to Changsheng Wang.

Top seeded lady compound Phoebe Pine (Worcester) beat second seed Grace Chappell (Arts Bournemouth) 147-142, dropping only 1 point in the last 12 arrows to equal the BUCS and All Unis record. The gents compound went to a shoot off as third seed Michal Kozera (Aberdeen) and Jake Walsh (Edinburgh) could not be split 143-143, with Kozera taking the gold north 9-8. Callum Platt (Birmingham) and Holly Hunter (Nottingham) won the bronzes beating Connor Rides (Wolverhampton) and Josephine Stewart (St Andrews).

Simran Pansear (Nottingham) won the ladies barebow, beating Leah Millington (Newcastle) 6-2, the top two seeds producing a very close final. The second and third sets were tied and in the crucial fourth, there was only a 1 point difference. Panesar had previously beaten Alice Uloth (Newcastle), Uloth taking the first set but going on to lose 6-2. Millington beat Rosemary Evans (Nottingham) 7-3 in a very competitive semi-final. Uloth beat Evans 6-4 for bronze. Men's barebow second seed Matt Waters (Nottingham) defended his H2H crown from last year with a 6-0 win over top seed Rens van Velzen (Warwick). van Velzen had come through a tough semi 6-4 against Daniel Kilgallon (UCLan). In the other semi Tom Underhill (Surrey) pocketed the first set, but then Waters came back for a 6-2 win. Underhill then lost the first set in the bronze match with Kilgallon, but went on to win 6-2.

Henry Cossey (King's) and Katie Axup (Loughborough) won the longbow events, although there were only 7 entries combined.

There were also separate novice H2H events. The novice gents final was between David Bosmans (Coventry) seeded first and Luc Davison (Warwick) seeded third. After five sets the pair were locked at 5-5, meaning a shoot off for the title, which Davison took with an X. Kobe Pioquinto (Lancaster) seeded 2nd beat Daniel Cooper (Liverpool) seeded 5th for bronze. Ramona Seremesic (Warwick) won ladies novice recurve, the top seed dropping only 1 set in 4 matches. She beat her team-mate and second seed Amy Phelps (Warwick) in the final. Ellie Noble (Loughborough), seeded 5th, beat Thanaya Leelakanok (Surrey) seeded 3rd 6-2 for bronze. Joe Maskell (Bath) and Ilia Sediq (Loughborough) won novice barebow gold and there was a longbow novice gold for Ngai Ching (Queen Mary).

Sunday WA900

Louisa Piper (Nottingham) won the women's recurve WA900, winning all three distances. Charlotte Llewellyn-Smith (Durham) was the runner-up in all three distances and prevent a runaway win. Piper's winning total was 840, with Llewellyn-Smith 14 behind on 826. The battle for women's bronze was exquisitely close. Lauren Rawlings (Chester) and Hannah Evans (Nottingham) were dead level after two distances and then shot identical scores at 40m to both land on 808 points. Rawlings took third spot ahead of Evans on combined 10s, 34-33. Shauna Punjabi (Royal Holloway) was fifth, dropping a few points at 50m to end on 803. Hannah Burnage (Warwick) was sixth on exactly 800, with Ffion Edgeley (Loughborough) one behind. Heather Hughes (Edge Hill) was 8th on 791. In the 780s, Natasha Homer (Edinburgh) and Charlotte Chard (Nottingham) completd the top 10 with Chard having the 3rd= highest 40m.

In gents recurve, James Woodgate (Warwick) also won all 3 distances and sailed home on 860, a full 37 clear of the field. Yang Pei (Oxford) was second after the first distance, with Tom Braxton (Leeds) two behind him. Braxton moved up to be 4 ahead of a group of Pei, Ben Evans (Loughborough), Ugo So (Birmingham), James Gardner (Warwick) and Dominic Kelsey (Nottingham) all within a point of one another. At 40m however, Ben Evans managed to overtake Braxton to take second spot 823 to 821. Ugo So ended fourth on 815, just holding off a late charge from Chris Woodgate (Warwick) by a single point. One point covered positions 6th to 9th, with James Gardner and Yang Pei on 811 and Wills Chiu (Warwick) and Max Harding (Nottingham) on 810. Dominic Kelsey was 10th on 806, the last gent over 800.

Warwick took an impressive 1-2-3 in the ladies novice standings. Ramona Seremesic scored 725 to win by exactly 50 points. Second was Amy Phelps on 675, with Robyn Nix 30 behind in third on 645. Anna Symanowski and Ellie Noble (both Loughborough) were best of the rest on 612 and 610. Warwick also won gents novice recurve with Luc Davison on 691. David Bosmans (Coventry) was second on 672. Jake Patel (Leeds) took 3rd place from Matthew Sin (Dundee) 11-10 on tens after both amassed 659, with Thomas Moore (Surrey) on 657.

In the other bowstyles Callum Platt (Birmingham) won gents compound on 875, two ahead of Jake Walsh (Edinburgh). Connor Rides (Wolverhampton) who had led after 60m finished third. Grace Chappell (Arts Bournemouth) won ladies compound more comfortably with 871, well clear of Josephine Stewart (St Andrews) on 848. Rens van Velzen (Warwick) held off Matt Waters (Nottingham) to win barebow gents. van Velzen did the damage at 50m, going from 16 points adrift to 16 points in front, going on to win by 10, 646 to 636. Ewan Kennett (Nottingham) was third on 601. Illaria Knibb (Bristol) won ladies barebow. Similarly to gents barebow, she was 13 behind after one distance, wiping out that gap over 50m and going to score 610 with Simran Panesar (Nottingham) on 591. Jasmine Turner (Manchester) was third, but well back on 532. In longbow, Henry Cossey (King's) on 533 and Katie Axup (Loughborough) on 416 both had triple digit winning margins.

Results

Separate men's and women's team categories were resumed, with team scores calculated across all non-compound archers and across the WA720, H2H and WA900.

Warwick won the men's team event and Nottingham won the women's team event, with the same two clubs picking up the equivalent sets of team silver and dominating the weekend. Taking third spot in the women's team was Loughborough, with Durham fourth, Oxford fifth and Bristol sixth. There were only 8 complete teams but with BUCS points on offer anyway, Surrey and Newcastle took the last spots and show the value of making sure you have enough bodies on the line. On the gents side Oxford were third, with Leeds fourth, Bristol fifth and Loughborough sixth. The last two clubs to collect BUCS points were Southampton and Sheffield - there were 11 gents teams in total. Leeds' 4th spot in the gents team is their best ever finish at a BUCS Outdoors, beating their 8th place way back in 1996. Sheffield's 8th placed gents team equals their best finish from 2006, whilst Durham's 4th placed women's team is their best result since the same year. Nottingham's women's team win comes 9 years after they last won team gold at Lilleshall.

In the novice team category, Warwick were the winners, with Loughborough in second and Coventry in third. Birmingham made it a BUTTS top 4, with Surrey fifth. There were 12 novice teams in total.

Top compound team was Birmingham, with Nottingham second. There were 4 compound teams in total.

James Woodgate (Warwick) took top spot overall for his first individual BUCS title, winning with a clean sweep. Tom Braxton (Leeds) was second as he was Indoors and took his haul of individual BUCS medals up to 4. Ugo So (Birmingham) was third, with Chris Woodgate (Warwick) picking up the fourth BUCS point. Ben Evans (Loughborough) was fifth, with Indoor champion Yang Pei (Oxford) leading the chasing pack in sixth.

Louisa Piper (Nottingham) won her first BUCS title, with an almost-clean sweep, with Shauna Punjabi (Royal Holloway) second and Lauren Rawlings (Chester) third. Punjabi and Rawlings both win the first ever senior individual BUCS medal for their respective universities. Fourth place and the last BUCS point went to Indoor champion Ffion Edgeley (Loughborough) on H2H against Charlotte Llewellyn-Smith (Durham). Hannah Evans (Nottingham) was sixth.

In compound, Jake Walsh (Edinburgh) and Grace Chappell (Arts Bournemouth) took top honours. Callum Platt (Birmingham) and Michal Kozera (Aberdeen) won gents silver and bronze, with Josephine Stewart (St Andrews) and Holly Hunter (Nottingham) doing the same on the ladies side. In barebow, Rens van Velzen (Warwick) just pipped Matt Waters (Nottingham) to top spot overall, with Simran Panesar (Nottingham) was top lady barebow ahead of Leah Millington (Newcastle). Illaria Knibb (Bristol) and Ewan Kennett (Nottingham) were third place barebows. Henry Cossey (Kings) and Katie Axup (Loughborough) were longbow champions.

In the novice recurve categories, Luc Davison (Warwick) could only be separated from David Bosmans (Coventry) on H2H - remember the novice recurve H2H final was between these two and was only settled by a shoot-off arrow. Kobe Pioquinto (Lancaster) took third. On the ladies side, Ramona Seremesic (Warwick) took a clean sweep to gold, with Amy Phelps (Warwick) taking a clean sweep of seconds to silver. Ellie Noble (Loughborough) pipped Thanaya Leelakanok (Surrey), level on points but by H2H placement, neatly mirroring the fact that this was what had decided H2H bronze. Top novice barebows were Joe Maskell (Bath) and Ilia Sediq (Loughborough). Ngai Ching (Queen Mary) was top novice gent longbow.
