SWWU league match 2 took place over the weekend of the 23rd/24th November hosted by Plymouth and Aberystwyth. League tables and results are available in full on the SWWU 2019/20 page.
Plymouth took a significant step towards what would be a first SWWU title. They scored 2214 to win SWWU match 2 by 63 points. 63 points covered the top 4 teams in match 1, but this time the teams were more spread. Joe Tripp and Alex Rowe (both Plymouth) were one point above and below 570 respectively. Exeter (who were third in match 1) just took second place on 2151 ahead of a spirited challenge from Aberystwyth who scored 2141. Regular longbow archer Alex Newnes (Aberystwyth) shot barebow in this match, scoring 548 - only 7 points off the All Unis record. Newnes already holds the longbow equivalent. Bristol were almost exactly 100 further back. Gavin Tsang (Swansea) scored 561 to help his side to fifth, just over 2000.
With 2 wins out of 2, and with a remarkably consistent line up and scores, Plymouth top the table with a maximum 20 points. Bath, who were second in match 1, did not shoot in match 2 and drop to 6th. This match was Aberystwyth's first top three match finish since January 2016, but they did not shoot in match 1 and lie 7th. Second place in the league is currently occupied by Exeter who have 17 points from a 3rd and a 2nd. Exeter have won the last 3 senior SWWU league titles, winning 13 of the 17 fixtures in that time. Bristol currently sit third - after having finished 4th in both matches.
In the novice team event, Plymouth made it a double, winning by a point per arrow on 1217. Exeter were second back on 1036 and Swansea third. Top individual was Oscar Johnson (Plymouth) on 452. That result leaves Plymouth on 20 league points with both Exeter and Swansea on 17. Exeter won compound match 2 and had the top individual score with Catherine Hughes' 563.
SWWU reconvenes for an Indoor Championships in Exeter on Sat 7th Dec, the first time the league has held such an event. This will comprise a ranking round and individual H2Hs. The ranking round, a Bray I, will count towards the league table round 3. The individual H2Hs will be yet another first for the league.
