SSS league match 3 took place over the weekend of the 23rd/24th November hosted by Edinburgh and Dundee. League tables and results are available in full on the SSS 2019/20 page.
The third SSS league match of the season was closely contested and brought with it a third different winner. This time it was Edinburgh who got their noses in front with 2191 - the same total that won match 1 for Napier. Close behind, Napier themselves scored 2174 to finish second in the match and go back to the top of the table. Napier edged out St Andrews by 6 points for the second time this season, despite Yohann Renault (St Andrews) top scoring in the match on 583. Guillaume Andrieux (Glasgow) was next on 571. Only 23 points separated the top three sides and Brian Kim, Robin Burton (both Edinburgh), Andrew Smith (Napier) and Paul Ross (St Andrews) all exchanged scores in the low 560s.
After the top 3 however, there was a gap of 172 to Strathclyde who were fourth, four short of 2000. Strathclyde, Aberdeen, Heriot-Watt and Dundee finished 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th for the third match in a row.
These results put Napier back on top of the SSS senior tree over Christmas. They have 43 points, ahead of St Andrews on 42 and Edinburgh on 41 with two league fixtures to play. St Andrews have the highest match aggregate (6,622 v Napier 6,574 v Edinburgh 6,490) at the moment. This would come in to play should two teams finish level on points. Napier have never won the senior SSS title, but have finished runners up five times, most recently in 2017.
SSS novice league title is also developing in to a three way fight. Strathclyde took top spot in match 3. They amassed a total of 1406, well clear of Napier's 1329. A further fifty behind, Edinburgh pipped Heriot-Watt for third, though Lea Corp Dit Genti (Heriot-Watt) was top novice individual on 494. Strathclyde's novice total jumped up 200 points in the fortnight since the previous match.
The top of the SSS novice table is now even closer than its senior equivalent. Strathclyde, Edinburgh and Napier all have 41 league points, but are in that order on match aggregate.
Edinburgh won the compound fixture by 2 points from St Andrews. Beth Martel (Edinburgh) was top individual on 573. Edinburgh have 44 points, whilst St Andrews and Strathclyde both have 41.
SSS match 4 will be a Worcester and take place on 25th January. This coming weekend of the 7th/8th December has the last of the regional action before Christmas: SEAL match 2, SWWU indoors and NEUAL novice champs.
