The regional league calendar got in to action over the weekend of the 26th/27th with SWWU and SSS league openers plus the Field Champs. Although no major revisions are expected, results from SSS match 1 are still being corrected, so this article focuses on events in England and Wales. There were wins for Plymouth, Cambridge (and also Napier).
Also a reminder that Tue 5th Nov is the score submission deadline for E-League Round 1. There will be fireworks to mark the occasion.
Plymouth opened their season's account with a 20-point win in a closely fought contest. They were neck and neck with Bath most of the day and with Exeter also close behind. Scores of 578 from Joe Tripp and 573 from Alex Rowe took Plymouth through the tape on 2225, with Bath on 2205. None of Bath's recurves broke 560, but barebow Paul Cobee broke the All Unis record, scoring 555 to break the existing record of 550. William Ingamells scored 574 for Exeter to help the defending champioins to 2194. This total is 2 more than they shot to win the opening match of last season.
Bristol were in fourth spot, not far behind on 2168, Will Black adding 561. Plymouth won the novice match, with Swansea narrowly pipping Exeter to second. Swansea won the first ever SWWU compound team of 2 match on 1123. Ieuan Thomas (Cardiff Met) was top individual compound on 570. Potential new side Bournemouth did not attend the match, nor did Aberystwyth.
For all of Plymouth’s exploits on the national stage over the last season or two, they have struggled to consistently replicate that form in SWWU - this was their first league match win since February 2018. Sixty points covered the top 4 teams which suggests that the SWWU title fight should be well worth watching in the months ahead.
See updated tables on the SWWU 2019/20 page. Match 2 is on 24th November at Aberystwyth and Plymouth.
Daventry Rugby Club hosted the (BUTTS) Field Champs, although it was opened up to all students this year. In the end, 26 archers, all from BUTTS clubs, shot in wet, cold and windy conditions. Cambridge won the team (1 recurve, 1 compound, 1 barebow) event, with Emma Davis (Warwick), Calum Platt (Birmingham) top recurves. Jack Atkinson and Liam Pattinson (both Cambridge) were top compound and top barebow respectively.
Organiser Jack Atkinson has said they hope to run a future field event that would be larger and aimed at all students. More on that will appear on UKSAA and you can see see this year's results on the Field Champs page, in the Other Fixtures section.
