SSS 1 and National Rankings [07/Nov/19]

Corrected results from SSS match 1, held at Heriot-Watt on Sat 26th Oct, have now been issued, as have results from the Student National Rankings competition, held over the summer.

In the Scottish league season opener, Napier and St Andrews served up a close contest, with Napier's 2191 taking top spot by a mere 6 from the 2185 of defending champions St Andrews. The opposite result played out with the top individuals in the match, with Paul Ross (St Andrews) on 577, 4 ahead of Andrew Smith (Napier). Both sides were over 50 clear of third placed Edinburgh (2133), who were themselves over 150 clear of the rest of the field. Strathclyde were next, back on 1980. Elsewhere in the match Guillaume Andrieux (Glasgow) shot 568, with Yohann Renault (St Andrews) on 562.

There were 10 complete senior recurve teams of 4 in the match, a new high for SSS. Glasgow fielded a full strength team for the first time, placing 8th, whilst Abertay re-emerged after a year's absence. For the first time there was a representative from the University of the Highlands and Islands too, although they were a compound.

Heriot-Watt won the novice match from Edinburgh 1261 against 1231, although top individual novice was Ilija Ristovski (Edinburgh) on 505. Strathclyde were third novice team and topped the compound match, although only they and Edinburgh had full teams here. Top compound was Josephine Stewart (St Andrews) on 570.

See updated tables on the SSS 2019/20 page, although these won't stay current for long. SSS match 2 is on 9th November at Edinburgh and St Andrews. Also at the weekend, the BUTTS main division kicks off.

Full results are linked to from the Student National Rankings page in the Other Fixtures section. There were 68 competitors in total and it looks like it will run again in the summer of 2020.

Alex Wise and Bryony Pitman (both Northumbria) won the recurve elements of the Student National Rankings that ran during the Outdoor season - the same duo that won the BUCS Indoor Champs. Sherman Ip (Warwick) and Rebekah Tipping (Birmingham) were second, whilst both 3rd place gents and ladies recurve were shared between Chris Avins (Birmingham), Matthew Gardiner (Bradford), Eleanor Brug (Cambridge) and Emma Davis (Warwick).
