BUTTS match 2 and SSS match 4 took place over the weekend of the 21st/22nd January. Oxford won a high scoring BUTTS match and go level with Nottingham (who were second) at the top of the BUTTS table. In Scotland, another win for Dundee left them on the brink of a maiden SSS championship with a match to spare.
On the Saturday section of the BUTTS match, hosts Warwick racked up a total of 2272, but it was not enough to stop Nottingham going top with 2289. James Woodgate (both Warwick) smashed in a 595, effectively matched by a 594 from Louisa Piper (Nottingham). Chris Woodgate (Warwick) scored 571, effectively matched by a 570 from Dom Kelsey (Nottingham). Nottingham eked out an advantage in team places 3 and 4, with Charlotte Chard (Nottingham) scored 568. On the Sunday, Oxford knew what they needed. Top scorer in Dark Blue was Yang Pei with 585, but this time the 570-ish support extended down to position 4: Ecaterina Pogorenii 573, Callum Henfrey 572 and Samuel Walby 569. This pushed Oxford 10 points ahead of Nottingham and only one solitary point away from the 2300 mark. Birmingham were fourth, just over 100 behind the top three on 2159. Joshua Morris-Jones (Nottingham Trent) top scored for his side with 567 out his team's fifth placed total of 2104. After 2 matches Nottigham and Oxford now both have 17 points at the top and they have very similar aggregate totals, 4,563 to 4,555. Warwick have amassed 4,523 but sit on 14 league points.
In the BUTTS novice match, Birmingham ran away with top spot. Their team (of 4) total was 2048, with Oxford second on 1781. Warwick, Trent and De Montfort were all in the lower 1700s. Top novice was Emily Nichols (Birmingham) on 541, with team-mate Guy O'Keefe on 528. Layla Nimmo (Nottingham) scored 500 exactly. Two wins from two put Birmingham top on 18, with Warwick in second on 14.
Dundee won SSS match 4, maintaining their perfect record this season, scoring 2143. Heriot-Watt were second on 2090 ahead of Strathclyde's 2064. Strathclyde narrowly pipped St Andrews, who landed fourth on 2060. Benjamin Homer (Strathclyde) top scored in the match on 567, with Yohann Renault (St Andrews) on 566. This result leaves Dundee on 60 out of 60 and 7 points clear with one match to go. Dundee are effectively assured of a maiden SSS title. If they win match 5, they will complete the first clean sweep of a SSS league campaign since Edinburgh won a truncated 3 match campaign in 2014/15. Heriot-Watt have 53 league points to Strathclyde's 52, however Strathclyde's superior aggregate total means that match 5 is essentially a straight shoot out for second place.
In the SSS novice match, the top three teams were within 14 points of each other. St Andrews won their second novice match in a row with 1338 and climb to third overall on 49 league points. Edinburgh were second (1327), with Strathclyde (1338) first. Liam Sowell (St Andrews) scored 514, Evan Kudler (Edinburgh) on 506. Edinburgh and Strathclyde now both have 54 points and go into a straightforward winner takes all match 5.
