Below is a review of Oxford v Cambridge, written by Adam Bates.
Sunday the 7th of May saw the return of archery to the beautiful backs of St John's College Cambridge for the first time in five years, for the 73rd Annual Varsity match between Oxford University Company of Archers and Cambridge University Bowmen. With scorching sunshine and a calm breeze, the weather was practically inviting high scores.
The Dark Blues successfully defended the coveted Varsity Rose Bowl with commanding wins by the men's and women's experienced teams. In the experienced men's competition, Oxford's Yang Pei, Callum Henfrey, and Adam Bates defeated Cambridge's Rokas Povilonis, Sean Seet, and Tom Jeffrey 2642 to 1833 in the Albion round, setting a new Varsity men's team record in the process. In the experienced women's competition (Windsor round), Oxford's Ecaterina Pogorenii, Zoe Harley, and Alana Halpin defeated Cambridge's Vicki Hodgson, Basia Kraus, and Liza Hadley 2568 to 2103, led in no small part by Ecaterina Pogorenii's exceptional 940, a new Varsity record. If the competition had been held as a record status shoot, this would be a new national record.
In the novice competition, Oxford's Bjarne Feddersen, Alana Halpin, Amanda Liu, and Gabriel Lazar defeated Cambridge's Jessica Sheridan, Matthew Keeble, and Benedict Michael Ewan Brown 2852 to 1165 to reclaim the novice plate and make it a clean sweep.
Oxford have now triumphed over their old rivals in 10 of the last 11 Varsity Matches going back to 2012, also winning both the men's and women's team trophies in both years since the introduction of separate experienced categories in 2022. Despite this, Cambridge leads the overall Varsity standings 45-28.
