Oxford and Warwick with opening wins [13/Nov/07]

Oxford and Warwick won the opening two BUTTS league matches, as Cambridge's title defence got off to a rocky start. The Light Blues' novices fared much better with two wins out of two, eight points out of eight.

Turning first to the season's curtain raiser in Nottingham, the Dark Blues of Oxford recorded their first victory in 25 BUTTS league attempts against their oldest rivals. The last time Oxford beat Cambridge it was to win the BUTTS title back in May 2003. Rob Fryers (Cambridge) with 563 top scored, but David Longworth 562 and Sam Johnson 553 combined with top lady Laura Vallius (ex-Dundee) and Ellen Davnell to complete a 25 point win. Hosts Nottingham posted 2120 for third place.

The second match saw Warwick put down a marker with 2225, led home by a magnificent 571 from Julie Chenery. As far as I can see, this is the first time (excluding Naomi Folkard) that a woman has top scored at a BUTTS match. League organiser Alex Stuart 563, Ian Rogers 555 and Phil King 536 were Warwick's supporting act as they completed an 89 point win. Despite a 565 from Matt Johnson, Cambridge were only thirty points ahead of Birmingham. Cambridge are on six points, two clear at the top, but have played a game more.

Derby made a little bit of history in their first BUTTS match. The senior Derby side were a little off the pace on 1919 but had a good performance from James Siggins on 530. Derby's multitude of barebow archers made an instant impact as Helen Bundy broke both the BUTTS and All Unis record for experienced barebow with 504 and Katherine Budd broke the BUTTS novice barebow record too.

Cambridge won both novice matches, narrowly beating Nottingham in the first and improving noticeably to comfortably win the second to secure maximum points - Birmingham who were third in both matches trail second in the table on 4 points.

The next BUTTS match sees Warwick go head to head with Cambridge again in Loughborough, Nottingham the other side in the match which is scheduled for Sat 24th Nov.
