Surrey joy plus BUTTS results [22/Feb/08]

Surrey confirmed winning the senior SEAL title in a league match at home to Sussex and Brunel, but in effect they were unopposed - Brunel were a DNS, Sussex fielded only two archers. Surrey just missed out on 2200, Matthew Sharpe's 565 the top scorer as he has been all season for the victorious Guildford side. Surrey won the novice match completely unopposed.

Surrey had done the hard work two weeks previously, when the were away to Imperial only to beat last year's champions by nearly 50 points, Matthew Sharpe on 571, Barry Cottrell on 568, with 564 from Travis Woodward (Imperial) in reply. Reading were second novice team behind Imperial. Surrey's SEAL average is over 2200 and establishes them as serious BUSA medal contenders and they should improve on last year's ninth place finished which left them just outside the BUSA ponts.

Nottingham won the first ever BUTTS match to be held at Derby with 2213, Amy Middleton-Gear top scorer with 566, Rhys Rhodes on 560 to keep Loughborough over 70 behind, despite Chris Norburn's 562 and Phil Middleton's 561. Birmingham won the novice match, edging out Nottingham and going temporarily top of the table and there was some joy for Derby picked up their first scalp of the campaign. In the other BUTTS match (which took place a week earlier) Oxford and Cambridge finished dead level on 2197 with no misses but there was heartbreak for the Light Blues as they lost by 4 golds, 89 to 93. Sam Johnson with 569 top scored for Oxford, Robert Fryers 566 top for Cambridge. Cambridge won the novice match easily.

The BUTTS Indoor Championship takes place at Loughborough on Sat 23rd Feb, the first time all seven BUTTS unis will have faced each other. It is one of seven fixtures from all five Leagues taking place this weekend. At the Champs there are 7 points for 1st place, 6 for 2nd etc. Warwick have a two point cushion over Oxford in the senior table, Cambridge a virtually unassailable 4 point lead over Birmingham in the novice table.
