Going in to Christmas, Liverpool sit top of the NEUAL table with maximum points from two matches, including an excellent victory over previous NEUAL winners Keele and York on 1st December. Their team total was exactly 2100, down on their previous mark of 2188, but just enough to see off Keele's 2079 and York last on 2043. Also in the first weekend of December, Sheffield scored 2119 to be 60 clear of Lancaster with hosts Bradford distant in third.
There were no individual scores over 550 in the two matches but solid team performances took Sheffield and Liverpool over the 2100 mark and to 10 points each. It is very difficult to see who are the favourites for the NEUAL senior title - Liverpool and BUTC 2008 hosts Durham are both undefeated at this stage but the leading sides all look capable of taking points off each other.
As well as winning their novice league match Sheffield were also winners in NEUAL Novice Champs held in Leeds. They scored 1371 to win by over 50 points, York got 1309 in second including event top scorer Joe Kierl on 473. Sheffield are now three points clear at the top of the novice table.
It is worth remember the NEUAL scoring system new this year. First-second-third in a league match gets 10-9-8. Novice and Indoor Champs are similar but with 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3 points down the placings. A bad indoor championships on Sat 9th Feb could prove very costly indeed.
