Results from SWWU match 7 have been published, see the SWWU 2024/25 page. SWWU 7 was a WA900 held in Exeter on 10th May with Bath winning the senior and novice team categories. One SWWU match remains and 3 teams could still realistically win the senior and novice team titles. Results from the Outdoor Championships of all 4 other regional leagues are now also available on their league pages.
In SWWU match itself, it was Bath who ran away with a comfortable match win, scoring 2723, almost exactly 300 ahead of hosts Exeter who were second on 2424. Bristol finished in third place and they were over 500 more points back despite Alex Williams top scoring individual in the match on 774. Miles Pemberton (Bath) led his side of maximum league points with 746, with Luke Burch and Darrell Mcfaweya (both Exeter) in the low 700s.
In the novice match Bath were the only complete team of 3 and won convincingly. Plymouth were the only club to field two novices and were second. Jonathan Jackson (Bath) was top individual on 624.
The top three teams in match 7 was the same as the top three in the overall SWWU table, but in reverse order. This has caused the top of the table to concertina together. Bristol are leading, with 62 league points, whilst both Bath and Exeter have 60. Bristol have the lowest match aggregate, so although a top 2 finish in match 8 will guarantee Bristol the league title, should they finish third (or lower), then whoever wins between Bath and Exeter will likely snatch the title on the line.
Something similar happened in the novice match, with the top 3 in the table placing 4th, 3rd and 1st. Exeter stay top on 51 league points, with Bristol on 50 and Bath on 48. If Exeter's novices win match 8, they will be champions - second place might well be enough too. Bristol's novices would need to beat Exeter's by 2 places (or by 1 place and 444 points). Bath's novices have the highest match aggregate of the trio, but need a 2 point swing on Bristol AND a 3 point swing on Exeter. Unlikely? Well, if the novice teams order from match 7 was replicated in match 8, then Bath, Bristol and Exeter's novice teams would all end up on 58 points - and it would be Bath taking the title.
The destination of the SWWU compound league title has not been in much doubt for a while. Swansea were already champions with two matches to spare and won again. Swansea have 70 out of a possible 70 points so far.
SWWU match 8 will be on a WA720 and will be hosted by Bristol on Sunday 18th May.
