December Catch Up pt. 2 [17/Dec/13]

Three of the four matches from the second set of NEUAL fixtures plus the NEUAL Novice champs are reviewed in this article. The result of the other match - a win for Lancaster on 23rd November - was dealt with the in the previous editorial NEUAL's Dozen Opening.

On the same weekend, York made it a Roses double, with 2177 to win their match and record the highest score of the second batch of fixtures. In response Keele notched 2107, with Sheffield one point under 2100.

One week later, Liverpool beat Durham 2148 to 2024, whilst 1988 was enough to see Bradford win their fixture against Leeds (1900) and Hull (1893). MMU Cheshire should have shot against Liverpool and Durham but didn't.

Robert Smith (Liverpool) scored 569 to top score in the round, whilst George Shields-Lount shot a 564 for Hull.

This set of results means that Liverpool are the only senior NEUAL team to make it to Christmas with two wins from two matches. York, Keele, Bradford and Leeds all have a 1st and a 2nd to sit a point behind, with York's aggregate seeing them sit sit second. That aggregate also suggests that York are by far Liverpool's closest challengers. The team with the third highest aggregate are Lancaster, but they have dropped two points and sit sixth.

For League Matches and for Championships teams score 15 for 1st, 14 for 2nd etc., so a good (or bad) performance at the Championship events can make or break a title challenge.

As for the novices, in the three league matches, Sheffield nudged ahead of Keele and Durham pipped Liverpool, plus there was an easy win for Bradford. Alex Barnsley (Liverpool) was the top novice scorer on 511.

In the novice championships, Sheffield were just the right side of 1400 with 1411 to win. Second placed Keele scored 1397, with Liverpool in third on 1348. Those three sit on 45, 43 and 42 points at the top of the table going in to Christmas. Bradford and Huddersfield (5th and 4th at Novice Champs) are on 40.
