Oxford won the 2014 BUCS Outdoor Championships, going one better than last year and adding the BUCS Outdoors title to the BUTC crown they won in February. Oxford won a BUCS senior team title for the first time, with a score of 4661 coming from Alexander Smith (1190), Matthew Langton (1186), Charlie Birch (1170) and Ciprian Zahan (1115). Two scores over 1200 took Warwick on to 4608 in second place, with Tom Hall and Jorge Lindley (1203 and 1201) alongside Madeleine Meatyard (1123) and Enrik Nako (1081). Defending champions Nottingham picked up bronze with Oliver Jackson (1196), Richard Haydock (1178), Bryan Hoadley and Victoria Bratty (both 1028).
There were 260 starters, a record since the 1440 round was brought in and exactly matching the record high set in 2006.
This Dark Blue triumph is, Oxford's first team trophy in a BUCS event, following three successive silvers (Indoors and Outdoors '13, Indoors '14) and comes hot on the heels of their successful defence of BUTC. With records going back to 1996, Oxford have now racked up 12 top 5 finishes in 19 years. Warwick also maintain a strong record in this competition, having never finished lower than fourth in the last eight seasons. Nottingham didn't defend their title, but pick up their fourth set of team medals in five seasons from the season finale.
Loughborough pipped Derby to fourth place 4354 against 4333. Arthur Coveney and Curtis Tatner (both Loughborough) scored 1135 and 1112 against an 1137 from Tom Currall (Derby). The final teams to win BUCS points, from sixth to eighth, were sandwiched close together, but it was Southampton who took 6th spot on 4263, with Nottingham Trent 7th on 4242 and Edinburgh, champions two years ago, in 8th with 4236. Ellie Dyson (Nottingham Trent) scored an 1144, with Fraser Keir (Edinburgh) on 1142. Southampton's John Bowes and Andrew Howe finish a point either side of 1080. Cambridge were in 9th place on 4179, ahead of Aberdeen in 10th on 4137. Bath on 4103 were next with London 12th, 18 points under 4000. Alexander Hickson (Bath) scored 1210, whilst Tak Ho and Maryia Karpiyevich (both Cambridge) notched 1163 and 1113, whilst there was an 1107 from Simon Garrett (Aberdeen).
In the novice team event, Edinburgh took gold with 3244, their title winning trio comprising Johanna Meyer (1123), Jacques Janos Peters (1080) and Marcus Wright (1041). A total of 3192 from Melinda Higgons (1091), Michael Hall (1084) and Sarah Lester (1017) won silver for Nottingham. Bridget Evans (1116), Tuan-Anh Nguyen (1005) and Arman Amini (951) won bronze with a total 3072 for London - London also won novice team bronze at BUCS Indoors. The teams were quite well spread out, with Birmingham 4th on 2982, Oxford 5th on 2917, Loughborough 6th on 2850 and Southampton 7th on 2742. All four sides had their top scorer in four figures, with Sam Rees (Birmingham) 1055, Kayla Haffley (Oxford) 1026, Kate Carter (Loughborough) 1127 and Sam Kilgallon (Southampton) 1002. Huddersfield rounded off the top eight.
Kieran Slater (Leicester) won the gents recurve 1440 in convincing fashion. By the end of the long metric he was 31 points clear, eventually scoring 1253 to win by 43 and also break the BUCS/All Unis record by 5 points. Alexander Hickson (Bath) took second place 1210 ahead of bronze for Tom Hall on 1203 and 4th for Jorge Lindley on 1201 (both Warwick). A mixed short metric saw Lindley overtake Hickson to go up to second after 50m, but then drop to fourth at the end of the day. Lindley becomes the first gent to break 1200 and not win an individual medal, taking the consolation of a BUCS point. Alexander Smith and Matthew Langton (both Oxford) were 6th and 7th on 1190 and 1186, sandwiched between Oliver Jackson and Richard Haydock (both Nottingham), 5th and 8th on 1196 and 1178. Tak Ho (Cambridge) was the last of the leading group on 1163, followed by a small gap to Fraser Keir (Edinburgh) who led the chasing pack in 10th place with 1142. 19 gents broke 1100.
Hannah Beasley-Suffolk (Imperial) was the winner in the ladies recurve division, scoring 1202, with Charlie Birch (Oxford) the only lady close to her on 1170, with Ellie Dyson (Nottingham Trent) third on 1144. After the first distance, the top four women were separated by only four points. Madeleine Meatyard (Warwick), who would go on to finish fourth and claim the last BUCS point with 1123, was the leader. However 60m proved the decisive distance, with Beasley-Suffolk 26 clear of Birch and Birch 11 clear of everyone else for this distance. Hannah Beasley-Suffolk completes the career BUCS double, having won BUCS Indoors ladies recurve title in 2012. Maryia Karpiyevich (Cambridge) was 5th scoring 1113, whilst Amelie Aichinger (Surrey) was sixth, on 1107. After the leading group of six, there was a gap of just over 40 points. Rebekah Tipping (Aberdeen) scored 1068 ahead of Emma Davis (Warwick) on 1065, Nata Chavanich (Southampton) on 1059 and Veronique Heijnsbroek (Aberdeen) in 10th on 1050.
Novice gents was a closer affair, with Michael Hall (Nottingham) overtaking Jacques Janos Peters (Edinburgh) during 30m to take gold on 1084, with Peters on 1080. Rob Littlechild (Cambridge) scored 1069 to claim bronze, with Sam Rees (Birmingham) in fourth on 1055. Marcus Wright and Patrick Gray (both Edinburgh) were next on 1041 and 1026, whilst Tuan-Anh Nguyen (London), Michael Gray (Nottingham Trent) and Sam Killgallon (Southampton) all cleared 1000.
Kate Carter (Loughborough) scored 1127 to win the novice ladies title, despite a fightback from Johanna Meyer (Edinburgh) who finished on 1123 and Bridget Evans (London), third on 1116. Behind the medal winners Melinda Higgons (Nottingham) scored 1091, and there was then a 75 point gap back to Kayla Haffley (Oxford) and Sarah Lester (Nottingham), the last two over 1000.
In compound, Matthew Dale (Warwick) went one better than last year, winning with 1342, 19 points clear of Thomas Taylor (Coventry) on 1323. The leading pair were well clear, with James Edmondson (Warwick) and Billy Gao (Birmingam) third and fourth on 1291 and 1283. Ladies compound was dominated by Stephanie Clason who won with 1325 and Hope Greenwood, silver with 1321 (both Edinburgh). Erin Prior (Coventry) was third on 1298, whilst the last BUCS point went to Amyce Aurora-Smith (Bath) with 1288. Luke Ingham (Swansea) scored 1288 to win gents novice compound and beat the old All Unis/BUCS mark by six points. Lucy Powell (Edinburgh) was the only lady novice and her 1191 missed out on the equivalent ladies record by nine.
Huw Vaughan-Jackson (Edinburgh) defended his gents barebow crown with 823. Ste Jones (Swansea) was second on 729 to keep the winning margin under 100 points, before a huge drop down to the battle for third. Having been fifth with 30m to go, Liam McDonnell (Southampton) grabbed bronze with a total of 561. Lewis Shaw (Huddersfield) was fourth on 556, while Luke Edwards (Swansea) missed out on a BUCS point by a point, on 555. Jennifer Mankin (Edinburgh) scored 962 to smash her own existing BUCS/All Unis record and finish 70 clear of Elizabeth Rees (Bath) with 892. Once again there was a big gap down to third place, with Annie White (Oxford) on 703 and Anna Lawrence (Swansea) 688 in the BUCS points. Harry Dean Lofthouse (Loughborough) shot 825 to demolish the existing BUCS/All Unis record - runner up Graeme Stevens (London) exactly matched the previous record of 747, ten points ahead of Jorge Alberto Salas (Bath). The medal winning novice lady barebows were Yasmin Beladaci (Sheffield) 520, Hannah Cook (Durham) 501 and Emma Thatcher (Bath) 484. There were 37 barebows, down from 47 last year.
A total of 9 longbows took on the challenge of a 1440 round and there were 2 novices on the Metrics. Luke Rieman (Warwick) claimed a new BUCS/All Unis record with a score of 571, ahead of Edward Pike (Edinburgh) on 438. Emily Williams (South Wales) took ladies longbow gold, after a swing of 30 points over 30m. Williams' final total was 375, with Victoria Swann (Bath), the defending champion, second on 361. Nicola McCullogh (Northumbria) was third on 249. Top scoring novice longbow was Jessica Watts (Warwick) on 300, Watts missing out on the BUCS/All Unis record by only four points.
A total of 5 BUCS (and All Unis) records were broken as the curtain was almost (but not quite) brought down on the 2012/13 university season. The shoot was once again marshalled by the AFS crew. There was also a H2H event held on the following day to BUCS, which will be reviewed separately. As ever, massive thanks to all those who organised and took part.
