Warwick won their third straight BUTTS league match, by a margin of almost 50 points, with 2271. Results elsewhere in the leg mean that Warwick are very heavy favourites to claim the BUTTS title when the final matches take place on 25th February. Poor weather conditions meant that the Cambridge hall dipped well below freezing during the shoot [corr. apparently the temperature was actually a few degrees above zero] and travel conditions particularly on the way back were less than ideal.
As Steven Johnson put it succinctly on the BUTTS website, "A huge thank you to all the Minibus drivers for getting your team home safely".
The cold did not affect Jorge Lindley (Warwick) who top scored in the match with 577, whilst all three of Warwick's other team members (Alan Dawson, Matt Dale and Matt Cranham) recorded totals in the 560s. This show of strength in depth surely bodes well for BUCS Championships in a fortnight's time. Cambridge grabbed second place with 2222, whilst Birmingham nudged Oxford in to fourth 2209 to 2201. Liu Zhaoyong (Cambridge) 567, Jack Bryant (Birmingham) 570 and Matthew Langton (Oxford) 569 top scored for their respective sides, whilst a 571 from Tom Cram took Loughborough to 2178 and fifth place.
Nottingham could only finish sixth in the match on 2169 and things could have been even worse as they narrowly avoided a vastly improved score from their city rivals Nottingham Trent who got 2161, leaving Derby adrift in eighth on 1980.
Loughborough won the novice leg comforatbly on 2025, the chasing pack just over 50 behind. Cambridge got 1972, with Birmingham and Warwick on 1967 and 1966 respectively. Ten novices broke 500, with Eleonore Cossade (Nottingham) on 527, Enrik Nako (Warwick) one behind and Jack Dumanat (Loughborough) on 523.
With one leg to go, the BUTTS tables give Warwick a virtually unassailable six point over Oxford, 24 points to 18. Warwick need only finish sixth out of eight to guarantee themselves their fourth BUTTS senior title in eight years. The novice title will be a virtual shoot off between Birmingham on 21 points and Loughborough on 20, with Cambridge lurking on 18 if both stumble.
