Exeter were the hosts and winners of the first SWWU match of the season on 26th November, in a match whose result was turned by SWWU's mixed teams rule. Exeter also won the novice match and are poised to remain top of the table for 16 weeks as SWWU is now effectively on hiatus until March.
Exeter's team total of 2091 was their actual top 4, with SWWU organiser Xi Yuan leading his team home with 550. Crucially for Exeter, their fourth score was the top novice in the match, Hannah Mawdsley who scored 477. Alex Hickson (Bath) top scored overall in the match with 558, but Bath were second with a SWWU team score of 2032. Bath's actual top four scores added together totalled 2106 - a difference of 74 points that would have been enough to win.
In third place, Swansea's all male score of 2029 fell to 2001, with Rhodri Curnow top for the Welsh side on 556. Plymouth fielded only experienced gent archers, so saw their fourth score chalked off completely, dropping from 1716 to 1390.
In the novice leg the teams finished in the same order with Exeter on 1373, well clear of Bath who were themselves well clear of Swansea. Plymouth recorded no score.
There were several compounds at the leg, with Phill Dunn (Swansea) coming out on top with 583.
All is not plain sailing for all the clubs in this season of the smallest of the leagues. SWWU's fifth team, Gloucestershire did not attend the leg at all for financial reasons and the next SWWU leg is not scheduled to take place until Sun 18th Mar in Bath. Such a huge gap between matches has been caused by hall availability, but is clearly not helpful to the competition.
In an attempt to close this gap, organiser Xi Yuan is looking at the possibility of using local Open Competitions as proxy matches and one hopes that local organisers will look kindly on the prospect of a 40+ boost in attendance.
