The first round of SEAL fixtures were held over the weekend of the 3rd and 4th of December. These matches were hosted by Imperial, London and Sussex, with Sussex stepping in as a replacement host at the last minute.
Although they were in three geographically separate venues, the match was effectively fought out between Imperial, London and Southampton. All three sides produced good team efforts and all finished with 13 points of each other in the low-mid 2100s. Defending champions Southampton notched 2134, which was seven more than Imperial's 2127, which was in turn six more than London's 2121. Simon King (Southampton) and Sherman Ip (London) both top scored for their teams with 553. Essex were fourth on 2050, largely thanks to a 568 from Lifei Zhang. Sussex, Surrey and Reading were sandwiched close together around the 2000 mark in fifth, sixth and seventh respectively, whilst Kent were well adrift in eighth. Top individual in the match was Matt Sharpe (Surrey) on 574.
In the novice match Southampton and Essex were clear at the top. As in the senior match, Southampton just edged clear with 1395 against 1372 from Essex, although Alexandru Zaciu (Essex) was the top novice in the match with 493. Surrey were third on 1256.
Like SUS, this season SEAL have moved across to the all vs all split venue format. SEAL will have five rounds, one each in December, January, February and March, with the BUCS scores counted as a separate round on top. If the opening round is anything to go by, this should be a hotly contested league, with the format meaning that all sides will have several opportunities to take points from each other.
The next round of fixtures are scheduled for the 21st/22nd January in Essex, Kent and Southampton. See the latest SEAL tables.
