Keele kicked off the 2006/07 Regional League season with a resounding home win against Liverpool and Sheffield, re-arranged fixtures meaning that this match got the opening weekend of the season all to itself.
The home side were led by Andrew O'Connor, his 566 over 30 points clear of team mate David Holmshaw and Liverpool's James Milburn who both got 532. Stuart Rawlins and Matt Walker made up the Keele side who posted 2143 - a good score so early in the season. Keele only joined NEUAL last season but made rapid progress from sub 2000 to well over 2100 and now look like NEUAL title contenders. Liverpool, in second, just missed out on 2000 points. Louise Smith's 522 was the top lady and top score for Sheffield, who were a further 80 points behind.
In the novice team category, the team scores were well spread out as Keele's 1403 was enough to beat Sheffield's 1281 and Liverpool's 904. Keele-ites (Keelers, Keelies?) David Williams with 487 and Rob Ford 473 were the top novices.
Next week all five regional leagues were due to be in action, but unfortunately, Oxford have had a hall booking problem, so that match is postponed. Elsewhere, Aberdeen play host to Dundee and Napier in SUS. Bradford are the hosts against Sheffield and their new city rivals Sheffield Hallam. Defending champions Exeter host the first SWWU leg of the season, whilst Surrey kick off their SEAL campaign at home to Brunel and Sussex.
