In the last SEAL match of the season, postponed from before Easter, Southampton beat Reading, with Brunel a DNS. Rob King top scored for Southampton with 550, but despite a 535 for Reading's Richard Barber, Southampton ran out comfortable winners 2115 to 1784. Southampton's novice team score 1292 beat Reading who scored 1057, remarkably all three of Reading's novice team shot barebow.
Southampton finished up second in both senior and novice SEAL tables as a result of taking maximum points from this match. Reading's seniors finished an extremely creditable fourth in their debut SEAL season. SEAL Outdoor Champs is scheduled for 20th May in London.
Cambridge won the BUTTS title with a win at Oxford. Ric Whalley 572 and Ian Caulfield 560 led the Light Blues to 2230, a full 55 points clear of Warwick's 2175 for whom BUTTS League Organiser Alex Stuart top scored with 559. Hosts Oxford were third on 2146. Cambridge are now guaranteed to win BUTTS title with one match to spare because of the BUTTS rule that dictates the worst performance of the season is discarded. Even if Cambridge fail to shoot they will still carry forward an unassailable 29 points. Even a win for Warwick in the last leg would leave them falling back to 27, after the discard. Oxford were third in the leg and will finish there barring freak results in the final leg.
Cambridge's novice team are well clear in the novice table, one win away from a 6-leg clean sweep. Birmingham are in second place overall, but could be overtaken by Nottingham but Nottingham must finish two places ahead. Oxford produced their best novice performance of the season and finished second in the leg. Phil Middleton maintained his lonely vigil as Loughborough's novice team, the BUSA Indoor Gents Novice Champion was top novice in the match on 534.
Saturday 5th May sees the last BUTTS leg of the season held in Cambridge and the SUS Outdoor Champs held in St Andrews. SUS Outdoors has stayed as an Albion/Windsor unlike NEUAL Outdoors which changes this year to a Shortened Metric 1 and 2. Reminder that BUSA Outdoors entry forms are due in by Thursday 17th May.
