Derbies for Derby [14/May/07]
You have no idea how much that headline appeals to the tabloid sub-editor in me.
The sixth and final BUTTS leg of the 2006/07 season yielded yet another close battle between Cambridge and Warwick, with Cambridge emerging a mere 3 points to the good. Although Cambridge had the league wrapped up with a game to spare, the margins between the two clubs have been slender - 10 points or less in four BUTTS legs and at BUSA Indoors. At BUTC, Warwick out-qualified Cambridge but lost to them in a semi-final shoot-off after the match finished tied. Cambridge's novices won the novice match to give themselves a perfect six wins from six. A quick scan of the BUTTS website leads me to suggest this is the first time in 12 seasons that any side has won six out of six in this tough league.
Elsewhere Oxford were third in the senior table, whilst Birmingham finished second in the novice table, Nottingham third, despite a DNS to finish. Loughborough finished bottom of both, but I must say a word about their novice Phil Middleton who scored 3009 points, an astonishing 66% of Loughborough's novice team aggregate over 6 legs. This must be some kind of record.
From 2007/08 BUTTS will have its first new addition as Derby will be joining. The structure of the league will also be changing to become more SUS like; smaller league matches and end-of-season championship events. It was too late to get BUSA endorsement for 07/08 (as previously reported here - sorry), but is a possibility for 08/09, not just for BUTTS but for all the leagues.
In terms of competition Derby will have their work cut out, as the lowest BUTTS score recorded this season by any senior side in any match was 2011. At BUSA Indoors, barebow-heavy Derby scored 1764, although they will feel the benefit of regular inter-uni competition. Sadly De Montfort, who could also have joined BUTTS next year, have not shown any interest and it seems as though their club is in real danger of going under next year.
