St Andrews was the venue for Edinburgh winning their 23rd consecutive senior SUS fixture with 2210 - top scorer was Alexander Lamb with 569. It is notoriously difficult to assess Edinburgh's true form leading up to BUSA, but they can afford few slip ups since Emma Downie is at (Senior) World Championships in Izmir, Turkey and Andy Ward is shooting compound and only on the reserve list for recurve. They were defeated in similar circumstances in June, as BUSA, absurdly, booked BUSA Outdoors to coincide with the World Uni Champs.
Last season SUS had three "other" universities well over the 2000 mark. Heriot-Watt have lost the formidable Lorna Provan. Dundee's practice time has been cut to a paltry 90 minutes per week because of Sports Centre repairs. Napier had all their practice sessions for the first three weeks of term simply cancelled by their Sports Centre then in the fourth week had their one 2 hour weekly session moved to a Friday night. They are still awaiting a regular slot this semester. Unsurprisingly, all three have suffered badly.
The real story from last SUS league match of the year is the performance of Aberdeen, who scored just a whisker under 2100 to finish second in the league and whose novice team broke 1500 easily on 1535 to claim second here also. Their top scorers were Stephan Poth and Michelle McLean each on 529 and the improvement looks unlikely to be a flash in the pan since novices Nathalie Gough on 521 and Stephanie Scott on 519 were the second half of the senior team. Edinburgh's novices may have nearly topped 1600 featured a magnificent 548 from Kyshiea Steele, but they still had to work to get the 3 points. Aberdeen also have several compounds including Jamie Alexander who was a point away from a 570 last month.
The UK's most northerly university archery club have improved significantly over the season and have a presence at BUSA Indoors, their first since 2002. Aberdeen had been in danger of being SUS League's best of the rest due to the poverty of their opposition, but this performance suggests they are now there on merit. The SUS Indoor Champs, which is a freestanding competition unlike its NEUAL counterpart, takes place on Sat 24th Mar at Strathclyde.
