BUTTS double header [16/Feb/07]

Warwick and Cambridge won a BUTTS leg each over the previous two weekends, Warwick winning their home leg 2221-2218 and Cambridge winning in Birmingham 2225-2215. The pair are unusually evenly matched and are poised to go down to the wire for the BUTTS title this year. The Light Blues are on 17 points, Warwick on 16. Oxford picked up two 3rd places with 2148 and 2123 and sit on 12 points, almost, but not quite out of touch with the leaders.

Cambridge's novices partied like it was 2003 and 1999 respectively to sit with three wins from three. Over the two legs, the Light Blues picked up 23 out of the available 24 points. Birmingham and Nottingham came second and third for the third consecutive leg about 200 points behind. Phil Middleton maintained a lonely vigil as Loughborough's novice team, but picked up a 5th place when Marc Tamlyn was the only novice from Oxford 490 plays 420.

Richard Proctor (Warwick) top scored in the Warwick leg with 573. Colin Geenes (Coventry) guest top scored in the Birmingham leg with 576. Yi Song (Nottingham) with 551 in Warwick shot the highest ladies' score of the BUTTS season so far, whilst 529 was the top novice score shot by Jack Bryant (Birmingham) and Daniel Strange (Cambridge) on the successive weekends.

Back when we partied like it was 1999 because it was (November) 1999, one of the BUTC commentators Dave Spinner (Warwick) shot 580, also in Birmingham, a BUTTS record which stood for 7.5 years. Until Sunday that is, when in the morning session Chris Bell (Birmingham) shot 581, but this new mark didn't last 7.5 hours never mind 7.5 years as Phil Glover (Loughborough) shot 585 in the afternoon. The record has been under threat in all three matches with top scores of 579 and 577, but Glover comprehensively smashed it. This was Loughborough's only bright spot as they remain rooted to the bottom of both senior and novice recurve leagues.
