Aberdeen won the third Scottish universities league match of the season with a score of 2177. Edinburgh's long run of consecutive wins was finally ended as they were pushed narrowly into second on 2172. Napier were third in the match on 2112, with the gap between third and fourth over 150 points. No archer scored 560 in the match although there were 559's from David Gardner (Aberdeen) and Gareth Fleming (Queen Margaret).
Edinburgh's seniors' most recent defeat in a Scottish universities match was the SUSF Outdoor Champs back in May 2002. Since then they have racked up 53 consecutive match wins, including 10 clean sweeps. It is worth remembering that Edinburgh do not field their full strength side in SSS fixtures, but in the last couple of years those winning margins have been falling.
Indeed, it might have been worse for Edinburgh but for the efforts of novice Roy Hortrabhvanon who scored a remarkable 557 to top score for his senior side. This score helped keep Edinburgh 60 ahead of Napier's senior total.
Napier themselves won the first two novice matches of the year but had to settle for second here, Hortrabhvanon propelling his side to 1524 against 1487 for Napier, with Heriot-Watt third on 1433.
Edinburgh are still favourites to win the senior league title overall. For Aberdeen to win the league, they would need to finish 83 points or 2 places ahead of Edinburgh in the last league match, being held tomorrow.
Napier still lead the novice league, 29 points to Edinburgh's 28, but as Edinburgh now have a fractionally superior aggregate (4295 against 4286), the last match is effectively a straight shoot out for the title. In the seven years since its inception, the Scottish universities novice league has been won by Edinburgh six times and Napier once.
