Southampon and London look set to fight it out for SEAL supremacy in 2013, with both teams picking up a win each so far. Southampton have won both novice matches with London second both times. The two matches were held across various venues over the weekends of the 24/25th November and 8th/9th December.
In a correction from initial results, it was London won the first SEAL match of the season. The Londoners' total of 2209 was upgraded from 2148 thanks to the inclusion of a 559 from David Barnes. Some Open competitions were used to make up the leg and Barnes' score had been accidentally omitted. Southampton's 2202 now gives them second place in the match.
Luis Felipe Paulinyi blasted in a 586 for Southampton, whilst Sherman Ip (London) scored 576 as the leading two sides built a cushion of 121 points. Surrey were third with Matthew Sharpe contributing 561. Essex were the other side over 2000 on 2049, with Kent fifth on 1979, Sussex a hundred points further back.
In the December match, Southampton scored 2203 against 2142 from London, the gap between second and third a whopping 166 points. Luis Felipe Paulinyi scored his second consecutive 586, whilst David Barnes hit 561. Theo Chen-Sverre (Southampton), Sherman Ip and David Forster (Brunel) scored 558, 557 and 554 respectively.
Kent were third in this match on 1976, just ahead of Brunel on 1970 - the best placings for these two since SEAL changed formats at the start of last year. Surrey were fifth on exactly 1900, with Essex on 1872. Queen Mary were seventh.
Four time former champions Imperial have struggled, finishing 7th on 1715 and 8th on 1733. Venue trouble has severely restricted the club's ability to function - results have suffered and they have yet to field any novices this year. Portsmouth made their SEAL debut finishing 8th and 9th.
In the novice matches, Southampton were winners twice with 1368 and 1497, whilst London were second twice with 1126 and 1305. Reading were third in the first match with 1105, whilst Kent followed up a fourth place in the first match with third in the second, scoring 1176. Across the two matches, the highest novice score was Jamie Parkin (Southampton) with 518.
The SEAL tables show Southampton and London way out in front on 21 points. Barring a collapse, these two will duel it out for the SEAL title. Surrey and Kent are on 16 points, with Essex on 14 in a topsy turvy race for third. Southampton have the maximum 22 novice league points with London on 20 and Kent third back on 15. Unfortunately there have been 7 DNS in the novice fixtures (as against 3 overall DNSs) after only two matches.
In sad non-SEAL news, it looks as though the clubs at Cardiff and Northumbria no longer exist, so they have been removed from the Club Directory listings. Please do check the Club Directory and email UKSAA if you see anything that needs to be updated.
