Nottingham completed the 2013 BUCS double with a narrow win over Oxford at Lilleshall. Nottingham's team total of 4460 was only 23 clear of Oxford who scored 4437 - the smallest victory margin since the FITA round has been introduced. George Harding (1214), Chris Fry (1159), Phil Middleton (1100) and Richard Haydock (987) saw Nottingham over the line ahead of the Dark Blue quartet of Kirstie Smith (1174), Matthew Langton (1139), Jack Sobey (1063) and Angelina Measures (1061). Edinburgh were defending champions but finished third, 200 points adrift of the leaders. Douglas Jardine (1141), Margaux Mesle (1084), Benjamin Arenas (1019) and Stephanie Clason (1016) pocketed bronze for Edinburgh.
There were 240 competitors.
This is Nottingham's first ever BUCS Outdoors title, adding it to the Indoors equivalent they have won for the past two years. As for Oxford, silver is their best finish in this event, matching their performance Indoors and bettering the bronze medals they won in this event back in 1996. The Dark Blues have only been outside the top 10 three times out of the last 18 BUCS Outdoor Championships. Third placed Edinburgh finish the season without a UK university title for the first time since 1994. All things are relative of course as the Scottish side accrued a 4th (BUCS Indoors), a 3rd (BUCS Outdoors) and two 2nds (E-League and BUTC).
Warwick were in fourth place with 4201, with Derby in fifth on 4117. Warwick finish in the Outdoors top 4 for the seventh year in a row, whilst Derby's 5th place is by far their best finish at Lilleshall. Both teams' top scorers finished either side of 1100. Warwick's Jorge Lindley and Tom Hall finished on 1104 and 1083, whilst Derby's Tom Currall and Shaun Rhodes notched 1117 and 1096. Southampton nudged ahead of Cambridge by 9 points, 4029 to 4020, powered by Luis Felipe Paulinyi's 1191 against a Light Blue 1126 from Maryia Karpiyevich. Loughborough were all alone in eighth place - their total of 3842 was 178 behind Cambridge, and 164 ahead of London, who themselves finished fractionally ahead of Bath to round off the top ten.
Nottingham completed the BUCS double by also winning the novice team event - a double double continuing on from the Indoor Champs. Nottingham successfully defended the novice team trophy from 12 months ago with a trio of Steve Tuplin (1137), Luke Bray (1045) and Nadja Albiez (977) giving them 3159 points. Nottingham's nearest challengers were city rivals Nottingham Trent who scored 3092, with Steph Reynolds (1097), Adeel Qadir (1094) and Ed Wilson (901). Third and fourth also came from the same city as Napier pushed clear of Edinburgh 3048 to 3019. Bethan Koller (1077), Andrej Chrustaliov (1026) and Fraser Bisset (945) picked up bronze medals for Napier - the same three also won silver at the Indoors.
Vlad Cecati powered Edinburgh's fourth place finish scoring 1106, whilst Southampton were fifth on 2955, with Andrew Howe on 1182. BUTTS duo Birmingham and Loughborough were sixth and seventh places respectively. In total there were 17 clubs with complete senior teams of four and 12 with complete novice teams of 3.
George Harding (Nottingham) came out on top with 1214 in an event he has made his own - 2013 is his fifth consecutive BUCS Outdoors individual title. However it was far from plain sailing as he found himself 7th and 20 points off the pace after 90m. The only man to break 300 at both middle distances, Harding made sure of the gold with a 352 and 30m - 20 points better than anyone else. Southampton's Paulinyi, 23 behind with 1191. Chris Fry (Nottingham) took third place by a single point with 1159. Alexander Hickson (Bath) was fourth, his 1158 garnering the consolation of a BUCS point. Two points separated fifth, sixth and seventh, with Douglas Jardine (Edinburgh) on 1141, two ahead of Matthew Langton (Oxford) and Thomas Cram (Loughborough), Langton sixth on 10s. Jardine had led after 90m. Tom Currall (Derby) was next on 1117, with David Forster (Brunel) on 1113. Eleven gent recurves broke 1100, with Jorge Lindley (Warwick) on 1104 and Phil Middleton (Nottingham) scoring 1100 on the nose.
Ladies recurve was dominated by Kirstie Smith (Oxford), who added BUCS Outdoors individual gold to her Indoor one. Smith's score of 1174 was nearly fifty clear of her nearest rivals, but behind her, the next four lady recurves were all finished within an arrow value of one anther. In fact second and third finished level on points and number of 10s - 1126 and 19. Maryia Karpiyevich (Cambridge) just held off a late Rebekah Tipping (Aberdeen) charge on Xs, winning 5-4. Remarkably, Karpiyevich won novice gold only one year ago, meanwhile Tipping claimed Aberdeen's first ever individual senior recurve BUCS medal. Just missing out on the podium, Amy Curnock (Nottingham Trent) scored 1122, six ahead of Gerda Pociunaite (Exeter), the last woman over 1100. Pociunaite had led after at 70m, but scored 20 points less at 60m to slide out of the medals spaces. Defending champion Margaux Mesle (Edinburgh) was sixth on 1084.
Andrew Howe (Southampton) produced a dominant performance to win the novice gents Metric I, scoring 1182 - 45 clear of Steve Tuplin (Nottingham). Howe top scored at the longest three distances. Tuplin's total of 1137 would have been enough to beat the previous BUCS/All Unis record of 1110. Vlad Cecati (Edinburgh) scored 1106 in third with Adeel Qadir (Nottingham Trent) on 1094. Fifth place went to Richard Anderson (Loughborough) who faded over 30m to end on 1074 ahead of 1058 from Christopher Avins (Birmingham). Luke Bray (Nottingham), Andrej Chrustaliov (Napier) and Liam Man (Bath) all in four digits.
Novice ladies recurve was dominated by the three archers who ended up on the podium who were in position by the end of distance number one, the leaderboard essentially remaining still all day. The honours went to Amy Bode (Aberdeen) with 1109, just ahead of Steph Reynolds (Nottingham Trent) on 1097, with Indoor champion Bethan Koller (Napier) in third on 1077. The chasing pack was led home by Ailsa Smithies (Keele) on 1010 ahead of Jessica Wilby (London) on 987 followed by Nadja Albiez (Nottingham) and Julie Saigusa (Edinburgh).
In compound, Chris Tombe (Birmingham) went one better than last year, winning with 1279, exactly 20 clear of Matthew Dale (Warwick), appropriately for compounds, 50m proved the key distance. Sanchit Guliani (Coventry) was third on 1243, whilst Elliot Moss (Plymouth) grabbed the last BUCS point on 1230. In ladies compound, Naomi Jones and Hope Greenwood (both Edinburgh) were first and second, with Jones well clear in first on 1355. Greenwood was second on 1310, whilst Amyce Aurora-Smith (Bath) grabbed bronze with 1259. Remarkably, Aurora-Smith won barebow gold in this event last year. The last BUCS point went to Louise Smith (Huddersfield) who scored 1247. Malin Berg (Edinburgh) won ladies novice compound but 1198. Both Jones and Berg missed out on BUCS/All Unis records by two points. Jonathan Cox (Birmingham) was the only gent novice compound but he had a good day, sticking 101 points on the existing BUCS/All Uni record with 1282.
Gents barebow was totally dominated by Huw Vaughan-Jackson (Edinburgh). His total of 908 was enough to finish over 200 clear of his competition this year, but also puts an impressive 67 points on to the previous BUCS/All Uni record. Joe Blatch (Sheffield) was runner up on 684, as Ste Jones (Swansea) took bronze by a point from Matthew Batchelor (Exeter) 659 against 658. There was little suspense in ladies barebow podium, as the top three with no less than 312 points separated first from fourth place. Miranda Timmerman (Bristol) won with 786, clear of Annie White (Oxford) second on exactly 700. Anna Lawrence (Swansea) was third on 611 with Juliet Spedding (Liverpool) taking the last BUCS point on 474. James Nelson (Southampton) won gent novice barebow easily, seting a new BUCS record with 747. Jennifer Mankin (Edinburgh) scored 897 to take the combined BUCS/All Unis record by 39 and win on the day by 143. Uniquely, Mankin now holds the novice ladies barebow Portsmouth, Windsor and Metric II All Unis marks. Novice barebow silvers went to Liam Dyer (MMU Cheshire) and Maria Louca (Exeter), with bronzes for Luke Edwards (Swansea) and Fiona Walsh (Southampton). There were 47 barebows.
Nine longbows braved the conditions (up from four last year). Victoria Swann (Bath) demolished her own All Unis record and broke the BUCS record with 515, whilst Katharine Simmons (Loughborough) on ladies novice longbow with another 304 crushing the old BUCS/All Unis record of 249. Samantha Gibson (Warwick) 281 and Charly Knight (Surrey) also beat the old mark. Michael Wooster (Bath) and Daniel Hallett (Swansea) were the only senior and novice gents on 262 and 233 respectively.
A total of 7 BUCS (of which 6 were also All Unis) records were broken as the curtain was almost (but not quite) brought down on the 2012/13 university season. The shoot was once again marshalled by the AFS crew. There was also a H2H event held on the following day to BUCS, which will be reviewed separately. Thanks to all those who organised and took part.
