Keele claim NEUAL Indoor win [27/Mar/13]
Keele were the clear winners of the NEUAL Indoor Champs, a score of 2249 giving them a lead of just over sixty points. Sheffield notched 2188 to finish half a dozen points ahead of hosts Liverpool who took bronze.
A trio of scores in the 560s from Neil Robson, Matt Howard and Daniel Ellingham, plus 550 from James Robbins propelled Keele to maximum league points and the NEUAL Indoors title. Sheffield were second with scores of 571 and 564 from Stuart Archer and Mike Smith guiding them to 2188. Hosts Liverpool scored 2182 in a remarkably even team performance - their four team scores were 547, 546, 545 and 544. York and Lancaster were fourth and fifth, with York on 2145 ahead of Lancaster's 2117.
In the novice team event, Keele's 1478 enough to see off Sheffield's 1448, to give the Staffordshire side the double. Chris Brennan (Keele) with 507 and Harry Cook (Sheffield) 508 were top scorers for their side. Top novice lady was Lancaster's Gemma Ainsworth whose 500 led the Red Roses to bronze medals. Top novice in the tournament was Bilal Saloo (Leeds) who scored 522.
The NEUAL Indoor Champs have a big impact on the overall NEUAL tables, partly because a poor performance here can lead to lots of lost points which are difficult to recover in the individual league maches. As things stand - with only 6 out of 19 league match results declared - Keele lead both tables.
In the senior table Keele have 29 points, with York second on 26 and Lancaster on 24. Sheffield (19) and Liverpool (18) have had a set of results less published but also have serious designs on the NEUAL crown. In the novice table, with the Novice Champs already included, Keele look heavy favourites for gold, with 40 out of 40 possible points. Lancaster are second but are back on 35, whilst Sheffield are third with 27, but with one less set of results included.
Keele have won the NEUAL novice league title once before, back in 2007 and won the senior title twice, in 2007 and 2011.
