The last weekend in April was a busy time for Bath as they played host to the fourth SWWU match and the second running of the British University & Open Clout Tournament.
In the SWWU fixture on the Saturday, novice scores were deemed eligible for inclusion in the senior team totals - Exeter's senior team was comprised of all novices, but their total of 3196 was nearly 300 behind Bath who won their first SWWU match of the year with a total of 3593. Swansea were third on 2860 with Plymouth on 2549 and Aberystwyth absent. Top scorers in the match were Alexander Hickson (Bath) and Kayleigh Bunker (Plymouth) who scored 1132 and 1079 respectively.
Exeter won the novice match comfortably, with Bath's two man team in second. Top novices were Chris Self (Exeter) with 995 and Liam Man (Bath) on 932, both on the Metric I.
There was also one All Unis record broken, with experienced longbow Victoria Swann (Bath) scoring 297, beating the previous mark by 10 points. In the compound division, there was a fifth university present. Dave Leach from the University of the West of England (UWE) scored 1144, 21 behind SWWU orgainser Richard Mill (Swansea). Amyce Aurora-Smith beat Rhiannon Norfolk (both Bath) 1138 to 1137.
Exeter lead both tables see the SWWU standings and they are strong favourites to pick up both titles with one match to go. Exeter have 39 points against Bath's 35 in the senior table and need only a fourth place finish to be sure. Swansea and Plymouth are level on 31. In the novice table, Exeter are on a maximum 40 points and need only attend match 5 for the win. Bath and Swansea are level on 34 and will shoot out for second place. Scores for SWWU match 5 will be extracted from BUCS Outdoors on 15th June, for which (reminder!) the entry deadline is Monday 20th May.
The following day, Bath hosted the second running of the British University (& Open) Clout Tournament. The round is a Double One-Way GNAS Metric Clout or 72 arrows at 165m/125m/110m as appropriate. Last year's event featured archers from only 4 universities, but that figure increased to seven this year.
Tom Hall (Warwick) led the field home with 306 points (out of a possible 360), ahead of Jethro Cooke (Bath) and Jorge Lindley (Warwick) on 292 and 278. Defending champion Alex Hickson (Bath) was fourth on 277. Eloise Cornish (Birmingham) was top lady on 244. Top novices were Andrew Howe and Janna Collier (both Southampton).
