Aberdeen and Warwick recorded home wins at their respective League Indoor Championships, with the events producing contrasting results, particularly fascinating with all eyes turning to Telford at the weekend.
SUS Indoors is a free standing competition, separate from the SUS League - a combined Scottish Unis team will be the hosts of BUCS Indoors. BUTTS Indoors on the other hand, counts as the League's 5th and final fixture.
Aberdeen's winning margin over Edinburgh was a mere 6 points, Aberdeen impressive on 2233, beating a full strength Edinburgh in to second on 2227. After a positive result at BUTC, Edinburgh were unable to hold on to the trophy they have won 10 years in a row, with a second defeat in three matches. Napier were third, back on 2098.
David Gardner (Aberdeen) was top scorer on the day with 572, with Graeme Black (Napier) and Fraser Keir (Edinburgh) top scoring for their sides on 560. Florian Trigodet (Heriot-Watt) scored 564 as second gent, but could not stop his side sliding to 6th. Rebekah Tipping (Aberdeen) made a senior recurve clean sweep for Aberdeen with 563 points, 7 ahead of Margaux Mesle (Edinburgh). Roy Hotrabhvanon (Edinburgh) demolished the novice field with 556, ahead of team mate Vlad Cecati's 519. Bethan Koller (Napier) was top novice lady on 515. Edinburgh won the novice match very comfortably on 1586.
There was also an All Unis record for novice ladies Portsmouth for Jennifer Mankin (Edinburgh) who scored exactly 500.
Warwick won BUTTS Indoor Champs to complete their fourth overall BUTTS senior league win in six seasons, notching 2237, with a 570 from Tom Hall. Oxford were the only side who could have overhauled Warwick, but the BUTC champions were third on exactly 2200, with 579 from Matthew Langton the top score in the match. Nottingham were second with 2206, a result that means they finish third overall thanks to 560s from Phil Middleton, Charlie Birch and Oliver Jackson.
Ominously for their rivals, the defending BUCS Indoor champions broke 2200 with neither George Harding nor Andrew Randall in their line up, both of whom are slated to shoot in Telford. Could they break the 2300 barrier?
Cambridge got 2198, only 2 behind their oldest rivals, but it was not enough to stop the Light Blues finishing second last in the overall table. Loughborough were a further 4 points back on 2194 thanks to 574 and 566 from Thomas Cram and Edward Reeves, whilst 560 from Shaun Rhodes took Derby to 2169.
In the final table, Loughborough were fourth on 23 points, ahead of Derby best ever finish of fifth on 21 points and Trent on 18.
In the novice match, Birmingham claimed the overall crown, finishing a handful of points behind Warwick on the day. Nottingham's third place in the championship kept them in second in the overall table ahead of Warwick on points aggregate. Werner Guevara (Oxford) with 536 [corr.] and Matthew Wall (Warwick) with 532 were the top novices, with Matt Harrison (Birmingham), Luke Reynolds (Cambridge), Stephanie Reynolds (Nottingham Trent) and Glen West (Derby) all the 520s.
Birmingham last won the BUTTS novice league title in 2004, although they have finished as runners up in the last three seasons. Loughborough were fourth overall.
In the last 4 years, Edinburgh and the BUTTS clubs have won 11 out of the 12 sets of team medals awarded at BUCS Indoors, with the other one going to Southampton.
