On the day after BUCS Outdoors 2013, Lilleshall played host to a FITA 720 and individual H2H tournament. SEAL Outdoors also used the team H2H format. Individual winners at Lilleshall were recurves Tom Hall (Warwick) and Margaux Mesle (Edinburgh), compound Naomi Jones (Edinburgh) and barebow/longbow Mathew Batchelor (Exeter). In SEAL, London beat Southampton in the final.
Although not officially a BUCS event, the Sunday H2H at Lilleshall saw most of the top archers from the day before competing. Numbers dictated that the archers were split into four categories: gents recurves (75), ladies recurves (28), compounds (23) and barebow and longbow combined (33).
As this is the first time the 70m round has been held for a British univeristy event, congratulations are in order to those who won their qualifying rounds to establish new records as follows:
As a side note, in the All Unis spreadsheet, gents senior Albion and ladies senior Windsor records will now be discontinued as they are no longer shot by senior archers.
In the compound division, top two seeds Naomi Jones and Hope Greenwood (both Edinburgh) came through to an all-female mixed final, Jones putting the seal on a successful weekend with a 144-140 victory over her club-mate. Matthew Dale (Warwick) beat newly minted BUCS champion Chris Tombe (Birmingham) 136-133 for third place.
Gents recurve was won by Tom Hall (Warwick) who qualified in 9th position. Hall had to do things the hard way, squeezing in to the semi-finals, upsetting top seed Luis Felipe Paulinyi (Southampton) in a QF shoot off. Robbie Crick beat 4th seed Douglas Jardine (both Edinburgh), before losing to Hall in that semi-final. In the other quarter-finals, second seed George Harding (Nottingham) beat Sherman Ip (London), whilst third seed Alexander Hickson (Bath) beat Jack Sobey (Oxford). Harding beat Hickson in the semi final. Both medal matches ended up in straight sets wins, Alexander Hickson claiming bronze, with Tom Hall taking gold.
In the ladies recurve, top seed Gerda Pociunaite (Exeter) lost to Madeleine Meatyard (Warwick) in the QFs, whilst 5th against 4th was an all Nottingham Trent affair, Ellie Dyson beating Amy Curnock in a shoot off. Margaux Mesle (Edinburgh) and Maryia Karpiyevich (Cambridge) came through in straight sets against Victoria Saduikis (Queen Mary) and Jade Van Parijs (Nottingham). In the semis themselves Ellie Dyson and Margaux Mesle won through relatively straightforward matches, with Mesle claiming the overal title, Karpiyevich winning the bronze medal match.
In the combined barebow and longbow category, there were four longbows and 29 barebows. The longbows were eliminated quickly and the top four seeds made the semi-finals. Top seed Huw Vaughan-Jackson (Edinburgh) beat John Hodgson (Loughborough), whilst 3rd seed Matthew Batchelor (Exeter) defeated Alexander Gilliland (Edinburgh), Hodgson going on to collect bronze. In the final Batchelor upset the top seed (and new BUCS champion and record holder) Vaughan-Jackson, to take the title.

Also recently published are the results of SEAL Outdoor Champs. These were held as team H2Hs at 70m. Both senior and novice team finals were between London and Southampton, who have dominated SEAL this year. London's seniors (Sherman Ip, David Barnes, Lifei Zhang) and Southampton's novices (Andrew Howe, Matt Potticary, Alexandra Miller) recorded victory over their opposite numbers. Surrey's seniors and Kent's novices won the bronze medal matches. Full results are available in the SEAL 2012/13 season.
London had already won SEAL for the first time this season, but the news away from the South East's league table may be less rosy for London. University of London's Trustee Board met on 22nd May and confirmed recommendations to 'reform' ULU which would effectively close it down at the end of 2013/14.
